Hi Everyone,

Have a quick question concerning the RX DI model, Do these machines require a higer octane gas or is regular 87 good enough?

Thanks!
House

I looked up the octane needed for a 2001 RX DI and the manual states MINIMUM octane rating of 91. If it were mine I would be running 93.

After searching the manual, it says to only run octane 87, and do not experiment with any other types? can anyone confirm this is correct or not?

Thanks

Dennis and Houseofcash,
Are you looking in a Seadoo manual or an aftermarket brand of manual??

My info came from the 2001 SeaDoo factory service manual that is here on the forum.

House, what year RX DI do you have? Are you looking in the service manual or the owners manual?

my rx says 91 right on the ski, above the gas filler. running higher octane then required is never bad, you don't not make as much power, but it's better than running lower than required.

I know I got here late but there is a point that needs to be made. At the time your ski was manufactured you pure gasoline was plentiful, but with government regulations today it's not, so 87 octane pure gas would be O.K. You need a higher octane rating with ethanol mixed with gasoline, I personally use 91 or 93 octane.

You make a good point Lou. I have another reason to use higher octane than recommended.
Unlike our cars, the enviroment that a jet ski runs in (shallow water with debris, etc.) is prone to cause overheating from time to time. Sometimes the overheat is short term and minor ( ski flushes the debris out by itself) and sometimes major and has to be physically removed. Detonation or "pinging" can occur when the engine becomes overheated and can cause serious damage. The higher the octane the less chance of severe detonation and piston damage.
The moral of my story is that skis' live in a very unpredictable world and need all the help they can get.

I have a 2000 millennium RXDI and it does say to run at least 91 octane I put 100% pure regular in it the other day along with the wrong oil from Walmart ,that’s another story and I got a maintenance light coming on and started running funny all of a sudden so I am definitely either going to add a octane booster or drain this out and put the higher octane like it says right there on the side of the Jetski LOL, I was told my 95 XP it’s a good idea to run higher grade gas that doesn’t have the 10% ethanol in Because it am clog the carburetors is what I’ve been told ,but I’m new to all these I just got three new used Jetski’s the other day so I’m still learning an am re-re building the carb on my 95 xp in the morning..please pray for me...
