RPM question

This is a 8-98 XP 951. Actually it is the one in the picture on the left. The engine runs just a hair over 7k rpm wide open. This one has never achieved the speed of several other identical XP's. It has always been 3-5 mph slower. Around 56 on the spedo and if with another XP getting passed. Have owned it 10 years now.

At what RPM should one be concerned about engine damage. 7k might be approaching a danger area?

Second, almost positive the pump and impeller are stock. Just looked inside both ends of the pump and can't see any damage. Does the combination of RPM and slower speed signal some sort of pump repair?

No worries on the RPMs. 7k is alright. Rpm limiter kicks in at around 71 or 7200 I think. Check your clearance on your wear ring. Make sure you are in tolerance? Are you experiencing any cavitation?

It could, but I would suspect that you would notice cavitation before a reduction in speed. Have you service your RAVE valves, recently?

Haven't checked the Rave valves will do that. No cavitation at all. Pulls hard out of the hole. There does appear to be some clearance on the wear ring but no dings or deep scratches. Have avoided beaching it but I am sure at one time or another it has been. Guess in the off season will replace the ring.

Is the impeller oem or after market? Same for the Intake grate.

Think it is all stock. Was concerned about the 7k RPM and if that was normal given the somewhat slower speed. If this thing went any faster it would be on the rev limiter if it is set at 7100 or 7200. Some of the other ones I rode with today were faster with 2-300 less rpm. It isn't a big deal if 7000 is safe. Guess I could just lift off the throttle. lol Will pull the pump and investigate further this winter.

If the previous owner changed to a diffrent prop it can let The rpms go higher also clearance between the impeller and wear ring can do the same when the gap gets bigger. I would start there.
