Rev Limiter stuck on?

Help!! On my 1997 Challenger I have this problem with it not running above 3000-3500 rpms in netural or in the gear on or off the hose or in the water. I yanked the carbs and cleaned and reinstalled them and same problem. I just read that a Netural safety switch or rev limiter is active in netural. Mine respond the same in netural or in gear. From the center position forward on the throttle it seems like a rev limiter is in effect in or out of gear...so where is the Limiter switch??? This problem has had me going for 2 weeks now...

Maybe its your coils failing at higher revs. Or plug failure.
Or fuel blockage/starvation.
What size engine do they have in them?

Switch location

The neutral safety switch is in the throttle/shift assembly. Remove the cap ends from the throttle, reverse lever and trim lever. Remove the screws holding the trim plate down and slide up over the levers. Remove the assembly screws and lift the throttle/shift assembly up. The neutral safety switch is in the center of the assembly with a small lead to a plug. You can test the switch with a multi-tester to see if it is working. If not, you can just bypass it or replace it for about $70.

Ok got the throttle/ shift assenbly out of boat and the safety switch was sticking...got that unfrozen and it works. 2nd problem, with controller in boat in netural the throttle would go to full throttle position. I was told in netural it shouldn't go any further than 1/4 throttle... With the controller out of boat all looks fine without pulling it all apart. If I locate shifter slightly forward or back of center netural detent, the throttle goes 1/4 throttle like it should...I have searched all over for any adjustments in the manuals I have available, but no reference to adjustment. Any Ideas to cure this problem? Thanks for your help,...I'm getting closer to being in the water...lol

Good to hear that the biggest part of your problem has been solved. You didn't mention whether or not your engine was running past 3500 rpm. ...:hurray:

I still have the shifter assembly apart waiting on a response to get the shifter streightened out first. Ijust retaped the broken screws and figired I would finish before I reassembled a problem still.

I found the problem....TheSafety switch was the problem!!! Got it put back together and fired it up ...put in gear and quickly reved it up for a second...and oh yea....Dumped it in the water...and all smiles...It was choppy and lots of wind but I got about 45 with a full tank of fuel against the wind..YEEEE HAAAAA....all that work, and it runs like a mother^F(*787 rotex)

Same boat similar problem

I bought this boat from Karl, and have the same problem, but ONLY on the hose. It runs fine in the water, but on or off the hose out of the water, it idles at 3000 and revs to only 3500 and sort of bounces at 3500 (about as fast as a heartbeat).

Should I look at the same things, or is this something different?
