wear rings on 96 challenger 1800 done rotted and and gone away last summer. the impellers have some dings and dents on lead edge.
Do i just replace rings and be done or would it worth upgrading to some aftermarket impellers and rings? Thanks for your opinion Eddie

If your running with stainless steel impellers, get them reconditioned. If their aluminum, replace them with stainless steel.
Wear rings are wear rings...just replace them if their out of spec.. with too much clearance.

thanks, after getting the pumps off, its really not that big of a job i think. getting the old wear rings out and new ones installed will be the most work.
I think ill just go with impellers i have for now, i can come back and replace them later with out to much trouble if want to get a little more mmmp.

Hey Homeboy!....

Not to often I see one of my home town riders pop in.

I use a dremel tool with the round cutter on it. It looks kinda like a drill bit but is used for cutting. It works really good on the rings. Let me know if you have any problems with it.

I assume you ride around Gravine Island. Seems I remember just talking to a member about Gravine Island. It was probably you and I don't remember....

Holler at me if you need help. I'm always willing to help out my home town riders........

Hey thanks, i didnt even notice your location. yeah i have been around gravine a time or too lol.. I hope to spend a little more time in the water this year and less time with my legs sticking up out of the engine compartment..
I bought the boat last summer. I had issues with leaking exaust pipes, then carb trbls and fuel filters, and finally after i got the engines running good. i lost the propulsion. I figured it was thru hull seals because the wear rings look good and was within spec when i got. I guess they had rotted cause after taking pumps off last week there was big hunks missing out then. so I think Ill leave the hull seals alone for now, they wasnt leaking water.
thanks for the help hear, hope to learn more here..

btw i was wondering about refurbing the ride shoe's. can i bead blast the alluminun and repaint them with somthing? or is there a better way. im not sure what kind of paint would work good on the alluminum

Paint?....

I don't think it's really worth the time to paint the ride shoe. It's pretty much the only part of the boat that will always stay in the water. It will always get dinged up and paint will blast itself off.

Also, if you have not done it, don't pull that plate. It's a PITA to do alone. It also has to be sealed so you don't suck any air.

You said you had huge chunks missing. Was this from the wearing ring? If you have chunks missing but no real even wear all the way around, sometimes this means you might have a bad bearing. When the bearings are bad and the impeller shaft wobbles in the housing, the impeller may bite the side of the ring, taking out huge chunks. So, if you have the pump off or take it back down, try to wobble the shaft to see how much radial movement you can feel.

Pea blasting your plate won't hurt anything but I honestly don't see a reason for it.

If your down my way, around the bay or Dog river, holler at me!!!! We might can hook up. I've been wanting to pack up and take a 3 day trip up the river, heading north through the lock and dams but don't want to take the ride alone. It's always better to go in at least pairs in case something happens.

yeah i have always wanted to take a trip up the river too, as far as the wear rings and pump shaft, the shaft and bearings are tight, the wear rings had dry rotted i believe. everthing ive worked on this boat seems to indicate it doesn't have lots of hours on it, it just wasnt maintained worth a flip.. the tuned pipes had leaks in them, of course they new nothing about when i bought it, the carbs were coroded and sticky. i bought a nother set of carbs off ebay and was able to make 4 desent carbs out of six. i could not even get the needles out of two of the carbs on boat. the same ones the return spring wouldnt pull the throttles back closed.
Anyways i think i have the engines in good shape now. i can wait to see how it runs with pumps working.. and i still have a cracked oil tank issue i hope to repair.. i have had no luck finding a used tank.
thanks for all the help ive enjoyed reading your post on many topics.

here is a picture of impellers there are a few small dings on the leading edges, but the side are nice and square.

Yeah I just asked SeadooSnipe this question, form talking to some people at the lake they don't see a huge increase in bottom end from the lower pitch nor much in top end from the higher pitch. You may gain a little hole shot speed with the lower pitch and possible 2+ mph with the higher pitch or more top end. I would defininately replace the wear rings if you feel they are getting bad and do an impeller swap from SBT for $25 an impeller if you want those cleaned up. That is a great program you go to the site and fill out some simple form and they ship out your impellers after they call to confirm your order and then once you switch out your old ones you send your old ones to them. You have to send the olds ones back in 2 weeks but thats easy just pull the impellers and have them ready to ship when you recieve the reconditioned ones. They aren't aftermarket but at least they are ding free.
