removing fuel tank from 96 xp?

Hi, before I begin this adventure, could someone tell me if it is possible to remove the fueltank from a 96XP via the front storage hole. It looks as though it will fit, but I'd like to be sure!!

there was a recall on the fuel tank for 96xp which I don't think ever expires. i'd call your local dealer and have them run your vin, you may get a new tank installed for free.
