What would you guys say is the road to go.... Rebuilt motor from SBT for $845 with a year warranty or trying to buy a used OEM motor? This is more a quality and reliability question since I've heard some say that OEM build quality is better than SBT.

OEM build quality is better. But you are still stuck with a used motor with no warranty. I think I would opt for the motor that has been rebuilt and will have a warranty.

That is what I was thinking, I just didn't think it made much since to buy a used OEM motor for $650-$750 when I could just buy a SBT for $850. Now maybe if they were laying around for $250 than I might give one a try. I just waned to make sure that I wasn't missing something.

It's a hard call. OEM is better... but as said above... it's used. The only thing is... with STB, you have to ship back a good core. So... if your "CORE" is rotten, blown up (with big holes) or you just don't have one... then a used engine is your only choice. a 720 STB engine without a core will wind up costing you around $2700 to $2800.

For that price it definitely would not be worth it. But I have a core so I am not worried too much. Tell me are RAVE valves considered part of the core?

SBT wants the RAVE assembly except for the Red cap and sping holder. Its all listed on their engine policy page

good luck

There are other places you can check out too. FullBore rebuilds your motor with OEM parts I believe.

Yes, I have checked with them too. Their fall special put them at $150 more expensive than SBT and now that the sale is over they are around $250 more expensive.

Anyone think that Fullbore motors are worth $250 more than SBT?

Nope.

Also... fullbore isn't a core exchange shop. You have to pull your engine, and send it in first. STB sends you an engine... and you have 2 weeks to send your engine back to them.

That is what I like about the SBT setup...You only have to get dirty one time. With FB, you would need to carve out two Saturdays.

I've used Fullbore before, and i'd use them again. Come to think of it, i dont remember having to re-use old gaskets/o-rings to re-install the bolt-on parts of the motor, believe, there "rebuild" comes with a gasket kit, unlike SBT. Very dissapointed with that. Got customers motor back, only to have to wait, for a gasket kit.

Just went to Fullbore website. He's advertising "platinum" kits, so i think thats where the $250 difference is. Get the std rebuild, with either std wsm pistons, or pay extra for the plat. or pro-x pistons.

I did a couple STB's this past summer, and they came with all the install gaskets I needed. (and a quart of break in oil too)
