R&D Aquavein Intake Grate Question

I'm new to Sea-Doo performance upgrades, so forgive my ignorance.

I have a 2003 Sea-Doo GTX Supercharged 4-TEC with a broken grate (do not ask how because I honestly do not know). I'm debating on spending twice the money to get an R&D Aquavein grate for it as opposed to the OEM grate. What benefits will I see from installing the R&D as opposed to the OEM?

I'm thinking the R&D may help with handling and acceleration, but hurt top speed due to the extra scoop in the middle. I would think (in theory) that the two-railed OEM grate would allow for less restriction in water flow.

Help?

Eh...you're not making enough hp to warrant the R&D. If you ride chop...all the time?...maybe. Otherwise...get another oem grate and call it good.

So then how much horsepower do you need to be making to justify an aftermarket performance intake grate? The OEM SeaDoo intake grates look to be hardly better than no intake grate at all, they don't do anything to direct water up towards the top of the impeller for instance....

I'd be curious if there are any threads on here comparing different aftermarket intake grates to stock grates, what they do handling and speed wise compared to OEM. I've been searching and reading but haven't found any threads like that so far... if you know of one, please point it out!!!! Thanks!

Is your ski....215?...185?

An aftermarket grate like the R&D...the Riva..or the Worx...is gonna improve hook up in the chop....at a price....top speed.

Untill you increase your hp...it really isn't worth the extra scratch for an aftermarket grate.

For our hulls, I have an '05 RXT...the Riva is the fastest...followed by the R&D..with the Worx being the most aggressive...ie best in chop but kills top speed.

Remember...a grate is a drag....the more ponies you push to compensate for it the better. The extra hook up in the chop keeps that extra power doing what it supposed to be doing...instead of spinning outa the water because of some little waves.

Mine's a 2006 215hp RXT model. It has a stock OEM grate in it right now, but I've been leaning towards an Aquavein aftermarket grate for a winter upgrade (ie. I'm not in a big rush here, might not purchase for a few months).

I have a jetboat with 550 hp BBC engine and it has a performance aftermarket grate intake that gives it amazing hole-shot about 0% cavitation and top end in the mid-80's... the grate makes a huge difference in how it performs! Obviously, it has power to spare though. I have nothing but the jetboat to compare this RXT to (the RXT being my 1st PWC ever).

I very much appreciate your assessment of how the various aftermarket grates behave! Thanks!

I'm trying, trust me!!!! I can't get the nut on the shaft end loose; the shaft holder tool twists off the shaft before the nut starts to move! This nut does come off counter-clockwise, correct? I have the instuctions but they're pretty simple and don't address this issue of the nut not coming loose!

ps. I started a thread on this issue in the Troubleshooting forum earlier this evening. Right now I'm stumped how to get the darn shaft nut off. Grrrrrr!
