I'm in the middle of putting my 800 engine from my gsx rfi together and saw these things on the piston and the piston ring doesn't go in right there. What is this for? I read the instructions and it says the rings opening go each one facing on side of the wrist pin

the instructions are sometimes "generic".your ring ends go at the pins.if there are any markings on the rings, the marks go up,

Thanks for the help. Just put it all together just now. I installed 1.5mm oversize pistons and they don't hit the rave valve. The previous pistons were .5mm oversized and the raves look like the were worked on. Do i just leave it like that or do i trim it more?

It all depends how close they are. Just remember when the engine gets hot, things expand, so you need to check your manual for the proper clearances. I'd rather have the gap slightly larger, than one smaller and risk catching a ring and tearing up that new top end!

take the head off, put the valve in the slot, turn the engine over by hand so you can see how close the gap between the valve and the rings are. I would bet it probably needs to be clipped off a little more...

Yep....

It will need trimmed. The RAVE doesn't seal the piston. It just lifts the gap on the port. SO... you need a gap to keep the piston or ring from clipping it when it gets hot.
