I have a 580 engine and I removed the front cylinder to replace a piston (the rings were stuck to the piston). The cylinder to case gasket is now torn in a few places. Do I have to remove the rear cylinder just to replace the gasket, or can I just cut out the part of the gasket that I need from the new gasket?

Permanent fix?

If your looking to make a permanent fix to the machine, then yes. It's best to. But, I have done just what your asking. But, it was a temporary way of allowing me to get the motor all put back together so I could run it. Then, after I was satisfied, I'd pull the motor and replace the gaskets.
