We have a big gouge in the bottom of the boat, just got quoted for 2800 bucks to fix it, is that possible. Its white fibre glass showing, quite deep, but not all the way trough. there is no leak, just exposed fibre showing. It was explained like this: the exposed fiberglass will slowly get spread apart and cause water to penetrate and turn the fibreglass spongy. It will slowly spread and cause even more damage. Does this sound right?

He said for about $75 he can do a quick fix and basically fill it with silicone and put a few coats of gel coat over top of it. And it will "stop the bleeding" of potential water penetration for the rest of the season.

Also, the seadoo is in the shop right now to replace wear ring. Turns out the damage to the wear ring also caused damage to the pump. The pump wear ring housing is dented and the new wear ring wont fit properly. The mechanic said hes trying to bang it back to normal grinder etc. He says hes trying his best but worst case i need a new pump. Where can I get a used pump if it is worst case scenario?

how much is a new/used pump???

I havent priced new pumps for a new boat, but for others years, usually you can find them on ebay or here or other forums. Usually like 200 to 300. As far as the fiberglass, that price is crazy. I would check around. That explanation is dead on though. Water will penetrate and cause more damage. It needs to be out of the water and allowed to be totally dried out. I wouldnt fill it with silicone. You can patch fiberglass and do gel cote work fairly easy. Tons of info on the net and videos on youtube. Post up some pics and we will see how bad it is.

Any quality body shop can do the repair. You can take it to a few to get quotes. I would speculate it will be less than half what you stated above.

I bought all the gel-coats that my skis have. When I need to do a repair, I do it myself..
