Here's some pics of a piston out of my 96 XP. I have seen many pics of bad pistons on here but never saw one as bad as mine. Parts of the rings are embedded in the top of the piston. What would cause this much damage??

Yeah, I have seen pistons that look that bad. After viewing mine from all angles, I am pretty sure the retainer that hold the wristpin in let loose and the wristpin worked it's way over and hit the cylinder, splitting my piston in half.

That does NOT appear to be what happened to you.

I just wanted to use my bragging rights to show off my worser engine carnage!!! :reddevil:

Was your head and piston that dry when you took it apart? Or did you wipe it dry on that cylinder? It looks like it has very little oil on it. If you didn't wipe it dry and clean, then I would say oil failure, and rings started to seize and break off and ended up in the top of the cylinder and banged around for a couple hundred revolutions, before the piston started to chip off.

Notice on mine, it still has an oily sheen on piston and head

If you wiped it off, then disregard this entire description...

There was no trace of oil anywhere in that cylinder so I think that is more than likely the culprit. The sad thing is I bought the seadoo and was told it ran great but had a electrical problem. Got that straightened out and found out the motor was shot. I gave the guy I got it from a serious ass chewing and he still said he had no idea the motor was bad. With that much damage that's hard to believe.

If there is a way to kill a piston completely dead it looks like you two will find it!!!!!!!!

DAWG

Where we go near my aunts lake cottage people ride in with them like this thru the summer, where does the oil go? So sad to see the expenses pile up from negligence but that is what keeps me busy back in the city and 5 other repair companies.

It appears that his ski had oil in it. Other cylinder is a nice brown color.

Broken oil line or clogged somewhere cutting oil to this one cylinder.

Part of why I am thinking of adding a little oil to my boat from now on.

Well at least mine isn't negligence on my part. The idiot I bought it from did the damage.

Going to start that this year, adding 55:1 or so to the tank, at least for the first tank, and if it doesn't affect the way it runs too much, I may just keep on doing it.

So, is it typically the front piston that goes out? Seems like that is what everyone keeps saying.

If so, is there a particular reason for that?
