I have been looking and looking at theads to find out about spark plugs and spark plug wires! with no luck! The wires on my 98 speedster with two 787 motors has the original wires in it. (1998 on the wires). I know in the past on some of my old cars, the wires start to break down after awhile. I tried to pull the wires out of the coil with no luck. The little locking pieces on the side of the wires were pushed up with a screwdriver but no luck. Anybody out there know were to get new wires and what is the best plug to use?
Thanks!
Don

dont change the wires, cause they are part of the coils, but what u do is , take boot off at end where the spark plug is, if there is a tie trap holding boot on, cut it, and screw it off, if no tiestrap, its never been trimmed before, so take something such as a little pocket screwdriver in between boot and plug wire and go around it carefully, just to loosen seal of it, then unscew it from wire, then what i cut it with, (makes a nice clean job) it i take a utility blade (razor blade) and go up wire approx 1/2 inch, cut it off, and you will see nice clean inner core then, what u cut off is probably rusty (corroded) inner core, then screw boot on completly, and put a zip tie on it to secure it in place -- simple clean repair ........

actually they are not...

That plastic thing holding them in...it basically has to be broken into pieces with a small screwdriver. Once you have that retainer broken out the wires are screwed in...just twist them out.

I will have to look but some of the older models show a part number for that retainer. try a 93 or 94 XP. I know they dont show them on the 787 parts lists.

Its time consuming and a complete PITA. I would suggest cutting a 1/4" off and reinstalling the plug caps.

I really don't understand the "cut the end of the wire off" thing and reuse the wire? The wires are 14 years old! Sparkplug wires break down over time. At least they do in cars so I pretty sure they do the same thing on boats. So everyone is using old sparkplug wires and wondering why there boats are not running in top shape??? Hmmmmmm......

Listen they are not running in top shape before you trim them. You came on this forum asking advise. Minnetonka I'm sure has worked on these far more than you have, you can take his advise and see if it helps you, you car gets new wires every 50000 to 75000 miles! How many hours is that compared to a seadoo that has 50 hours on it. You either do that or try finding a new coil pack. You can spend 4 **IGNITION COIL 1 1 $98.49** If you can find one or try this FREE advise and save yourself money. There is a reason they are telling you to try this first. You probably shouldn't be so sarcastic in you first 5 post, you may not get the help you need from the experts in this forum in the future, Just to be clear I am not one of the experts but I do know that trimming your cables can help tremendously

Another thing to consider, plug wires in a boat or seadoo don't take near the abuse of those in a car. Your marine engine runs much cooler and is exposed to a very much cooler environment than the extreme air temps under your hood, so they typically last much longer. Take the guys advice into consideration in trimming the ends off, but if you want to buy new ones, that works too, just much more costly. The idea of this forum is for knowledgable folks to help others out and exchange useful information, not just throw parts in when a problem comes up.

This and many other posts contain tons of useful advice from seadoo and boat mechanics who work on these every day. While having car knowledge is a good foundation and gives you fundamentals, marine engines are not completely alike to car engines.

I was learned...lol by some of the best guys in the industry and they never really thought on a weekend warrior rec ski it was really necessary.

You are right though... why not right?? If you got money to blow (and its fairly cheap) put wires on it. The MSDs are what I'd go with. Prob dont even need to replace the clip, just screw the new ones in and if you have some marine shrink wrap put it over the coil/wire overlap.

Even though I have brand new OEM wire in my inventory, ive never changed mine.

Oh...and the million dollar trick is exactly grizz said...its fixed machines that didnt have spark.
