oil change maintenance for skis

mkov608,

Dunno bout those letters...I'm sure they mean somethin.

Tell you what... Put any 10w40 oil in your ski. Please keep us posted as to how long your sc holds up.

Once upon a time I put auto 10w40 in my motorcycle...I didn't get 20 miles before the check eng light came on. Took me a week before I figured it out...and then another oil change......4stroke motorcycle 10w40, eng light stayed off...no probs ever since.

Maybe one of those pairs of letters refers to being wet clutch compatible?...and therefore wouldn't need to be "spelled" out in the manual?

I'm looking forward to "need help SC blew and took out the motor" thread myself.

Why did you say non-synthetic? Here's what my '02 ownwer's manual says:

"Engine Oil
Recommended Oil

This watercraft features a 4-stroke engine
that requires 4-stroke motor oil for
internal engine lubrication.

Ensure to respect the following requirements.
Use 4-stroke engine oil that meets or
exceeds the requirements for API service
classification SG, SH or SJ. Always
check the API service label on
the oil container to be sure it includes
those letters. Only use high-quality
high-detergent oil.

CAUTION: Never use any two-stroke
engine oil.

Oil Viscosity
SAE 10W40 is recommended for all
seasons."

I ddin't see the words synthetic or motorcycle in the BRP manual at all. From that, I take it I can use any high quality, high detergent 10-40 oil that meets or exceeds the SG, SH, or SJ classification.

This is correct.

BRP did not make supercharged models until the 03 model year so if you have 2002 4Tecs (According to signature) they are not supercharged and you can use any good quality synthetic or non synthetic engine oil.

You are correct but this thread started regarding oil for a SC 4tec. The info in a 02 manual is completely useless for very same reason you mentioned. In a non SC motor I'd use synthetic all day but not in a SC motor.

Next time imma just go with a 10w40 motorcycle oil 4 stroke yes imma save as much money as I can even though the skis and trailer was about 38000 I'll rather save the 40 bucks from oil for each ski and use for gas... gad ain't cheap at 4.5/gallon for premium 91 octane

Ok, this question goes a bit against my theories.

i did a full oil change during break in the at 25hrs. The next one per manual was at 100hrs. I did another full change at 70hrs. Per manual I am one up before I reach 100hrs. I am getting ready for limited use during the winter months at 97hrs.
I was thinking of just pulling the oil and replacing it without the filter for the winter months then put 25hrs on her and doing a full change.

on a side note it states I have to change the friction sleeves, is this a must?
thanks
greg

IF you are changing the oil, change the filter, it is so simple it shouldn't even be a issue to think about. Unscrew 1 bolt, the lid can then be removed and a new filter replaced. Change your oil every fall when you winterize.

SeaDoo now recommends their semi-synthetic for sc models. That's what they put in it and is what I'd use. It's only $40 gallon retail price and like they said above, you'll most likely only do it once a year.

I do mine once a year. It is when I winterize. That way the old oil isn't sitting in my ski through winter. Plus, I don't have to worry about it when it comes time to play. As mentioned above, Seadoo semi-synthetic for SC models.
