is there any way to tell what brand starter i have? i know oem is denso. the one i have has no markings or tag. i know my starter has been out before as the po used the wrong mounting screws 13mm head rather than the Allan screw type which was a pain to get a 13mm socket to fit btw (very tight fit between mag cover and bolt). I'm thinking chances are it may have been replaced and don't want to reinstall a cheap starter and be left stranded. thanks

If the OEM tag is missing... then it's hard to tell. But... the OEM starter will have been painted, while mounted on the engine. So... it will have some paint missing on the side toward the engine.

If it has an nice even paint job... and no tag... then I'm going to guess it's aftermarket.

This is s bad way of doing it but..... look at the bendix. You should see the nippondenso logo ND in a circle. Like this

The rust was an option on that model year, LOL. Like I said it is a bad way of verifying it because someone could have swapped bendixes at some point. Post a pic.

If it's black.... I'd say it's a 99% chance of being aftermarket. The only black OEM Denso starters were from the RFi engines.

mine is an rfi engine but no tag or identification number.
i found a good used denso on flea bay for 69.00, is that a decent price? it is for a rfi 787.
then i can just rebuild it with new brushes.

Not ONLY the RFI's, the replacements from Denso are also black. The one in my XP is a black Denso, I stripped it and painted it white and cleaned it up. In the second pic you can see the ND logo on the bendix, this is for sure 100% a Denso starter. Thumper3322 ordered his OEM from Parker and it is black. They only come engine color when the engines are built and painted. You can see here an OEM replacement. But I agree on your 99% chance, since most guys buy the black $10 Chinese starter from ebay, and not a quality OEM unit.

It is a good price.. Order the brush set while you have the chance to replace them. They fail often.

i just found and bought a denso (has denso tag) starter on e bay for 50.00 shipped pretty clean on the out side. now to find a brush kit.

I had a DB Electircal starter on my 97 GTX that i sold. I know the aftermarket starters are not as quality as DENSO, but my DB Electric starter in the GTX performed excellent for over 2 seasons before i sold it.

I Had one from DB and some other brand They are not worth a F**k. REBULD the OEM!!!

I agree.

Every once in a while... you will get an aftermarket that will go a coupe years. But there are so many that die after a few months.... it's not even worth pissing with. Heck... I've see the shafts break at least 10 times, on the very first start.

Price aside.... it's not worth my time to install an aftermarket. Seadoo starters are a pain in the butt to install !

Back in the day... Goki starters were GREAT !!!! They weren't cheap... but they were 1/3'ed the price of a new OEM. But they went out of biz when all the Chinese crap hit the market.
