O-Ring/Circ-Clip Bewilderment

Hello,

I am trying to put together my drive shaft from tearing into it a couple of months ago. I have two O-rings the size of a silver dollar, one with a slit in it axially. I remember pulling one of these off from the hull next to the boot (bellows), but don't know which one it was. I am at a loss where the other one goes. It seems to fit along side the other o-ring, but I don't think that is correct.

The manual shows another o-ring between the floating ring and the circ-clip, but I don't remember pulling an o-ring off at that point. I think the manual is wrong. It shows the internal O-rings plus a third ring forward of the circ-clip.

Does anyone remember a post that warns against using the circ-clip? The fear was the circ-clip would fall off too easily and pour in the water. Maybe I am all wet on this, but I kinda remember something like that. I am wondering if I should throw away the circ-clip in place of a tie-wrap.

Any response is welcome and appreciated.

Thanks, Jerry

i never heard of warnings of the cir clip but have on he o-ring. the cir clip shouldn't fall off as the floating ring should pull back and cover the cir clip. the cir clip is an upgrade as the o-ring can rot of break off the creating a huge leak.
the o-ring on the hull next to the boot i believe is added for extra tension for the older bellows boot to help from cavitating or leaking. some use a zip tie instead which is what I've done. the other 2 o rings that i can think of is in the inner diameter of the floating ring to seal against the where the drive shaft slides through. I'm sure someone will chime in as i'm not sure if the xp is different than a gsx which is the one I'm familiar with but i think they should be the same with the exception of how it attaches to the pto. hope that helps.

Yes, Jammin, every thought counts to get the big picture. Here are some pix to help understand what I need to know.

they both appear to be something that the previous owner inserted to increase the tension of the bellows. neither are stock items in that location

The two o rings likely came out of the stainless ring, they seal it against the shaft. Originally there was an o ring that went into the groove to hold the stainless ring against the carbon seal. Later that was replaced with the circlip that doesn't dry out and fail later on. Personally my circlip was kinda tough to get onto the shaft so I'm not worried about it falling out.

the o-rings pictured are too big to have come from the stainless steel ring. The ones from the stainless steel ring would be the size of the diameter of the drive shaft

True, maybe they're from the pump/shoe seal for the coolant passage.

Whatever those o-rings are they did not come from the factory as part of the driveshaft, seal or boot. The only o-rings are the two small ones that seal the stainless ring to the driveshaft and the pump cone to the impeller housing.

Those large o rings are factory parts. They're number 3 on the diagram. One of them is at least from the factory.

Ok, thanks everyone. That takes care of the o-ring and I do remember pulling an o-ring off the housing .. it was so full of crud I didn't know it was there until I started cleaning up around the back of the boat. Something in the back of mind tells me the other one is truly a grommet from somewhere on the sled. Maybe the fuel selector or tank or someplace else. I kinda remember pulling it off and saying, "I'll remember where that goes, cuz it's a grommet".
