Carbon seal C-clip vs O-ring

I'm stumped. I have two seadoos, a 1996 GSX and a 1997 GTX. When I look at the parts manual for them it clearly shows an O-ring (#7 - 272000135) holding the metal support ring in place, but the diagram calls it a c-clip and all of the replacement kits have a c-clip instead of an o-ring. Also, the 1999 GTX parts diagram shows a c-clip (272000135). Note that the o-ring part number is the same in both. The 1996 GTS shows an o-ring and has a part number of 293300032. They both had o-rings when I opened them up.

I already bought 2 kits with c-clips, thinking they were an updated version, and I'm having a terrible time getting them to fit properly. Any help/advice is appreciated!

I used c clips on the last over haul session.

Work fine for me.

I think I remember that being the better and easier repair

The o-ring was superceded with the use of the c-clip. It is the correct part
