You either need a new starter or rebuild the one you have. I would only rebuild yours if its a denso starter(oem).

Clean/rebuild the OEM starter. If it's aftermarket... that could be your problem.

Also... what kind of battery is it? There are a lot of crappy batteries out there.

And finally... are any of the power cables getting hot? Old cables will build resistance, and you will loose cranking voltage.

It can only be what the others have stated.

Battery, connection or started. As mentioned, I can not stress enough that you should use only OEM starters. Few aftermarkets are with a darn

To confirm battery is good. Read the voltage at the battery terminals while cranking the engine. Post your findings for us.

I just ordered a used oem one that I will swap the japan made one.
Its a new AGM ETX-16(fully charged)
Both cables get hot, but I went to autoze and have 2 new ones that will go on the ski tonight.

I get that it is a new battery. But doing the voltage test will confirm there is no issue with it.

Being that the starter is not an OEM starter that is likely your issue. But again, testing the voltage as described above is free.

The volts go up and down when i try to start it, from 12.9v to even high 9.40v.
New cables and supporting this helpfull site and peoplw from work.

aint never going to start with 9.4V. I would take the NEW battery and have it load tested.

my other 3 batteries I had that worked recently all do the, they show charge of 12.50+v but when I try to start the volts drop and as soon as I let the start button go it goes back to the 12.0+ volts.

1 old battery, and 2 new ones that had full charge on them?? that's the part that don't make sense to me, even when I jumped the ski with my jeep battery it wouldn't turn it over more then the ski battery would unless the jeep was running, then it would start.

Generally I would blame a battery based on your description. But, if you KNOW the other batteries were good, then I would think the starter is toast. It could still r a poor connection if you have not removed and cleaned them.

Also, never jump the ski with a running item. It can easily smoke the MPEM which is big money to replace.

Kind of matters where you measure the voltage while cranking, too....

1) Across the battery
2) Across starter: From Starter terminal to engine block
3) - Battery cable: Negative battery terminal to engine block
4) + Battery cable & solenoid: Positive battery terminal to starter terminal

Grab a large battery out of a car and connect it in there, like 500cca or larger if you want to eliminate that possibility and you can use it for testing purposes instead of destroying the small and expensive ski battery, it it still doesn't crank well then there's definitely something else wrong besides the battery.

Got new cables today to try and see if that's the issue, also have an oem starter on the way.
I use the Voltage meter on the screws on the top of the battery. I will use the battery from my integra and use that one for the test.

PROBLEM FIXED!! Installed the new starter with the old battery and its got so much power that i have to let go the button instantly...
thanks again guys.

Aftermarket starters just don't seem to hold up.
Used OEM starters are better than new aftermarket. It's just one of the pieces our skis really like to be OEM,,,

Glad you are up and running.
