So when i put my '97 GSI away for winter it wouldn't turn over and i figured out it was the starter solonoid (sp). I just replaced that and now i have no spark. I took the coil down to my local ski shop and they checked it for me and said it was fine. So that led me on a wild goose chase on the forum. I read a posting about disconnecting the red and black wire going to the stator and that should check to see if the MPEM is bad, but i still get no spark doing that. Does anyone have any ideas where i should check next?

The coil on a 720 engine has the CDI built into it.

In the electrical box, there is a 3-way connection with the black/red wires. You need to disconnect the wire going to the MPEM, but leave the wire from the stator, hooked to the coil.

When you do this... you don't have a "Kill" anymore. SO... just check for spark. If you have spark... your MPEM may be bad. If you don't have spark, then your CDI/coil is bad, or the stator is bad. (720 is a simple system)

the 97 GSI has the black box, so the wire trick is not possible.

Did you use a battery charger with a "start" function last fall or this spring? Hopefully no...

What battery are you using? Is it old? Sounds like a battery that has enough to volts/amps to crank, but not enough to spark. Had a 4 stroke in here yesterday guy had a little battery. Put correct battery in and it fired right up.

Figured it out. I just had to trim a bit off my plug wires and re-attach the boots. runs great now, and i just re-did the seat and head banger pad =)
