i need help, i bought a 96 xp and it wasn't running at the time, the guy told me it ran fine but he blew the starter...he was right, the starter gear was actually broken off in the starter..anyway, ordered a new one, installed it..don't have my carbs or pipe on yet but i hooked up the battery to see if it would turn over..it didn't..then i realized i had the little black coil wire on POSITIVE instead of negative..i know this was a big boo boo....

switched it over to the negative post, the sea-doo turns over great but has absolutely no spark...

i checked all the fuses and there was one blown, the 10a in the back where the coil is...i've tried several sets of plugs, have taken off the stator cover and inspected in there, all looks good.....

how do i determine if i have signal from my stator to cdi, to mpem to coil...etc

i assumed it was my stator before i started reading and ordered another one off ebay, i don't mind if it isn't, i'll keep it as a spare but i want to get the sea-doo running asap so want to determine if i ordered the right part or if its the mpem or coil instead

(the mpem does chirp twice when i plug the lanyard in and guages work)

hoping someone can take me through this step by step, have mechanical skills, hate electrical with a passion though...very frustrating ....

Metal disintegrated bits in the stator can be just vacumned out. If you opened it up and found the bits had done damage and you ordered the parts, we applaud you!
The flywheel/stator assembly acts as a magnet for broken metal particles that interfer with mpem function by statically creating electrical noise.

The wireing harness system also needs yearly cleaning and dielectric regreaseing.

Congratulations. The rear box usually gets moisture corrosion that can be cleaned and regreased. If problem persists, disconnect the VTS and retry as an elimination option. Battery cables have a tendancy to not show lug oxidation/failure. Bill

when i opened the stator there was some metal frags. around the pick up coil...i cleaned those out the best i could, there was no obvious damage so i re-installed it hoping it would spark up, but didn't

all of the electrical boxes look clean and corrosion free...we don't have saltwater here in ontario so i don't think its a corrosion issue, i've tried re-attaching the black negative wire to the battery a few times too to make sure i have a good connection there....

i also tried testing the white wire to the coil with a voltmeter and got nuttin...no power,

tried testing the three yellow wires coming off the stator while turning over the engine but got nothing off those either.

tested those three yellow wires for resistance, got 0 when connecting red probe to one and black probe to another, but also got 0 when connecting red probe to yellow wire and black to ground (head bolt)

this is why i think its the stator but is this a good way to test the stator??

question?? why would the VTS affect spark ??

UPDATE..I replaced my magneto and pick-up coil and still have no spark..when i do the light test on the white wire going to the ignition coil (in the rear box) the test light does light up but its kind of dim...

Should the test light light up bright or just dim?? i would say its lighting up to about half of its potential brightness

I'm thinking i should order a new coil??

how do i test the coil to know if its bad??

yes. You can reverse the wires on it and maybe the other side will fire, just as a test.
A one sided coil means a new coil. Bill
