110 hp challanger 1997 new wear ring boat cranks idles fine revs good in neutral.takes throtle all at once, has no power, low rpms,,,,sometimes when it is slow to go the rpms turn up and it will plain out and as soon as it does the rpms drop and it struggles to go..if you turn to the right the rpms will increase and when you go straight again it drops rpms ...plugs look great...chainging them does not help could this be a rave problem?i have cleaned them...please help before i sink this thing and walk away!!!

Take plugs out and try turning the engine by hand. Just grab the drive shaft or PTO and turn it a full turn. I just want to see if the new ware ring is too tight and the impeller is rubbing against it. It happens some times and it will cause the engine to run bad till it clears out.

If thats ok then try a compression test.

but does that cause this power no power deal,it will sometimes power out of the hole then it sounds like a lazy transmission shifting drops rpms and struggles

Yep you need at least at top end job. Open up the head cover and look inside. Take a picture and post it if you can.

The gauge you used is it good? Some times they can read low but 100 psi is to low. Anything under 120 you need a rebuild

Also remember the compression reading need to be done at wide open throttle but to tell you the truth i dont think it will make a difference.

It could be a fuel supply problem… and normally I would say “Cavitation”… but what you describe sounds like as soon as the engine gets a good load… it falls off, and that’s due to very low compression. Right now you are probably making half of your power, and as soon as the engine loads, the burning fuel bypasses the rings, and won’t push the boat… and in a 2 stroke… it also displaces the fuel coming into the lower half of the engine, which amplifies the problem.

Rebuild the engine before looking for any other problems.
