HELLO ALL. PROUD AND WORRIED NEW OWNER OF A 95 GTS 580 AND A 96 XP 781. BOUGHT THE SKIES 2 DAYS BEFORE GOING TO WORK AND RUSHED TO WINTERIZE THEM BEFORE LEAVING.( AND BEFORE MANUAL CAME IN :o ) I HAVE A BOAT WHICH I HAVE ENJOYED WORKING ON FOR TWO YEARS BUT HAD NEVER WORKED ON A JET SKI. I DID WHAT I NOW SEE TO BE DUMBER THAN RUNNING MY BOAT WITHOUT WATER CIRCULATING THROUGH IMPELLER. YES, I TURNED THE WATER ON BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE AND OFF AFTER THE ENGINE WAS OFF. IT WAS ONLY A FEW SECONDS FROM THE WATER VALVE TO THE SKIS. SKIS WERE RUNNING GREAT WHEN I BOUGHT THEM AND I WAS JUST WONDERING WHAT TO CHECK TO SEE IF I JUST RUINED THEM. ANY HELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED AND I THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.

It takes a min or two...the whole exhaust has to fill up before it gets to the motor. If it was half full it maybe a problem if you transported it after.

I would suggest starting it again and most will shoot out. Get it slightly warm then give it a couple quick revs to blast out the exhaust. Also add some antifreeze to the exhaust.

You can run a seadoo with no water for about a min or so. I just keep touching the cylinders to check how hot they are. the other thing that heats up is the carbone (thru hull) parts on the XP. The GTS has the bearing carrier that doesnt have that issue...but needs to be greased about every other ride.

Your 2nd goof is that TYPING IN ALL CAPS IS CONSIDERED SHOUTING.

It's also so hard to read that I haven't bothered.

Please use either all lower case or ideally, correct sentence structure.

Thank you.

I'm interpreting from the original post that this may have been several days or weeks ago? so if there was water in the engine there may be some rust build up. Minne, I'm certainly going to yield to your expertise but just wondering if he should remove the plugs and shoot in some fogging oil and make sure he can turn the engine by hand before he fires it up?

LOL apparently I have just seen enough of it not to even notice it anymore. A decade of forum browsing will do that to you...lol

Thank you for your responses. I did fog the engine when i goofed the winterizing. It has been over a week since then and the temperature has dropped into the mid 20s. I have now started both of them and they cranked right up with no problems. The XP also has a grease fitting on the thru hull shaft. I am not sure if that is the one you were referring to Minne or if there is another. I have not yet run antifreeze through engine and was wondering if there are any tell tell signs of water intrusion into the engine. Thank you bigJake for your input and i hope this is easier to read Sabr.

You didnt winterize them if you have not run any antifreeze thru the cooling system. Most likely they are ok, but when freeze damage happens its pretty ugly.

If you had gotten water in the motor they would not have started. You would have to have run the hose for a few mins to fill the exhaust enough to get to the motor.

The grease zerks on the PTO dont need grease as frequently; esp if the boot is in good shape.

Look on your GTS; you'll see what I'm taking about. It will have 2 zerks hiding under the PTO cover.

Now, as a new owner do some searches and read a bunch of threads on what things you will want to fix/replace/keep an eye on. Everything you need to know has been discussed at least 50 times this forum.

Welcome to seadoos and this site.

Thank you again for your response. I am running antifreeze through them today to truely winterize them. I will also refog them. I will surely be needing a lot more help as i learn about my skies so thank you again and I'LL BE BACK.

So, South TEXAS hits mid 20's? i was in CHICAGO for 8 days and it barely hit that at night...did you move since setting your location?

People always think of heat when they think of Texas, but it gets pretty cold too. Two days mid 20s last week and it's supposed to be there again on Sun. or Monday. By the way it is the low at night. It's still early in the winter too. Last year it made it into single digits with a wind chill below 0. I know that might be warm for some people, but down here that's COOOLLLDDDD.

i've heard that the democrats blame george bush for the cold weather in texas

I'm to busy working in it to worry about whose fault it is. When it's cold some people can look forward to snow, but we don't get any of that. When it's 110+ degrees at
least i can look forward to getting on the water.
