Hello everyone! As you can tell I'm new to this site and seadoo's altogether.

I just bought a 1995 seadoo speedster! It has sometype of electrical problem, but for $1000 I figured why not give it a shot. The person I bought the speedster from had just moved into an apartment complex, so he had to sell the boat ASAP. The seadoo is in great shape! The hull is intact and the gelcoat is shiney. The interior is in great shape, no tears or cracking in the seats. The engine bay is also very clean. The trailer is a 2001 galvanized with good tires and all lights working. Best of all clear title.

Okay now the bad. The engine is not getting spark. According to the previous owner he was out on the water and the engines just cut off. There is now power at the console. Before buying the seadoo we connected direct power to both engines. They both turned over but would not stay on due to the lack of spark. I also performed a comp. test on all the cylinders and they all read 140 equally. In his attempt to track down the electrical problem he changed the ignition key cylinder and lost the key, lanyard. He also could not find the engine bay electrical box cover.

Now I know I need to get the service manual in order to figure out the problem, but damn it is expensive and has to be ordered(7-days). Now I have a few questions...

From what you have read, when I get the manual what should I look for first in order to solve the no power issue? Is there anything I should know about buying a replacement ignition key and cylinder? Are all seadoo lanyards the same for replacement? Where can I get the engine electric box cover?
Thanks in advance and I hope to be able to contribute back to the forum.

congrats dude...as for manual, sign up here on forum, and download your boat for 10buks, and if you dont want to keep subscribing, well, it only cost you that month, along with, all the free ? and answers....:hurray:

Start with good/new "load tested" battery, then check all the fuses and cables/grounds and terminal ends for breakage, corrosion, wear. Once you rule all this out, then post back.

You can take your boat to any dealer, and get a new landyard programmed.

I agree with tim thats a good place to start !! Also I would send for a 95 speedster manual I dont think there is one in the manual section of this site, But the $10. for membership is well worth the good info and people on this site!!!!!!
Your quote.....(In his attempt to track down the electrical problem he changed the ignition key cylinder and lost the key, lanyard.)
Did he loose the key or the lanyard? You need the key "on" and the lanyard attached to get spark.
If yours is anything like my 95 speedster, I have a non DESS lanyard (some have a DESS lanyard and some dont. Do you know if yours is a DESS lanyard or non DESS?
also you can get a keyed cylinder (ON / OFF only) at most auto parts stores, and as far as the electrical box cover they are hard to find, you might have to make one.

Okay I don't think the lanyard is DESS because it doesn't seem to have a metal contact, so I'm assuming a regular lanyard will do. Also about the ignition cylinder, does it have to be specific to the seadoo? I just want to make sure I can get all the parts I need tomorrow without having to wait a week for them to come in. I already bought new batteries, so I will just need to get the ignition and lanyard. If I can get everything this week I will post back on my progress. Once I get it started I will start to replace other parts of concern. I hope the electrical problem isn't to difficult to resolve, hopefully it is something the previous owner overlooked:). Thanks for all the help so far.

P.S. Is there anyplace online I might be able to find the ignition wiring diagram or can anyone send me a copy???

Thanks, Fred.

Can anyone tell me if the 1996 seadoo speedster shop manual will work for a 1995 speedster? I was able to get a hold of the electrical portion of the shop manual. Is the electrical the same on both 95' and 96' speedsters? Thanks

Well I am no expert but if you have no DESS then they are different in that manner. The 96' speedster starting system is linked to the DESS through the MPEM. Good luck, Karl and a bunch of other people on here have solved a multitude of my issues and showed me great modifications.

No… 96 was the first year for the security lanyard. You should have a standard lanyard.

It also seems to me that Sea-Doo had some drastic design changes for 96. (on everything) As far as using the 96 manual for your boat… sure, it will give you good info, but you will still have to evaluate if the info given is exactly the same. Things like the pump, cables, and much of the mechanical will be the same… but I think you will find the engine, and the electrical sections will not be exact to your boat. For example… the 96 speedster will have 720 engine… yours (I believe) has 650 engines.

Since you don’t have any power up to the helm… I would say your boat needs an MPEM unit. It controls all the power in the system. But, before you spend the $$$ on an MPEM… check all the fuses, and wire connections.

Good luck

I finally got power to the helm! I think it might be an ignition module. I have another question... I found someone parting out a 1997 speedster. I wanted to know are the hull parts interchangable with my 1995 speedster? Also could I use the steering cables and reverse cable off his boat as mines need to be replaced due to damage? Thanks guys.

You might want to look at the "parts" Link at the top of the page to compare parts quickly, side by side.

boeing747arowair-Usually Matheson Hammock Park near gables by the sea.

kustomkarl- I looked at the parts and they look identical in the diagram. They also have the same price on the parts finder. I know the engine and electronics from the 1997 are different, but are parts like the reverse cable, front hood, steering wheel interchangable? I could sure save a lot of $$$ and do more upgrades getting parts off the donor 97' speedster...

You should add you seadoo information to you avatar so in the future it is available to see so nobody has to search for you seadoo model back in the beginning post.... They should be the same, But I hate to tell you that and fine the cables are 2 inches shorter...try" www.sea-doo.com "and look at their parts forum for part numbers... just to be sure.

Karl

Thanks Karl, but the parts section on the website doesn't go back to 1995. I have the parts number for the 1997, but can't confirm they match up with a 1995. I will called the local dealer and they told me their parts list only goes back to 1996:(

I was going to check myself, but got buried answering questions...I'll look around to see if I have a older manual PARTS book around..I have a bunch of them just laying around for my birds cage...:ack:

Check back tomorrow late after noon..remind me with a PM...

Karl

Thanks Karl, I appreciate that! Working on the boat isn't very difficult, it's getting the right info and parts thats proving to be a PTA.

hmm...PTA..is that a school group...Parents Teacher Association...?
I know what you saying....soon you'll be out on the water and this will just be a old memory...
