Picked up a 97 xp and 2000 xpl for an amazing price and the po actually took great care of them and used the right parts/oils. Everything works. Even the trim and engines have never been touched!!
But that trailer is a converted snowmobile trailer. I need a way to winch forward and have it stop in the right spot. Also have to redo the decking . Any recommendations?

how thick is the frame around the trailer bed? If it's strong enough you could weld a winch post to it, otherwise you're likely rigging something up to the tongue with a cross bar.

I don't know how far you want to go with this but for securing just move the bunks close enough to support the ski and weld on a tie down point in the back for a strap.
 
I'm just going to let you know (from first had experience) the trailer is gonna float once you take the skis off. It's completely annoying, the bow will hit the deck pulling on cause it's not dropped like a PWC trailer. Please, don't waste any time or money trying to make it work. I had the same set up back in the early 90's when I got into skis. I lasted 1 season, hit the trailer chipped the gel coat, slipped on the deck, it was just a kluge job. I had blocks cut to pinch the hull in the front so I could tie it down. Honestly, I would have left the trailer there. It looks like an old trailer and probably wouldn't fit the width of "later" sleds after the late 90's and newer, so sled guys aren't gonna want it unless they're vintage sled guys. Sorry, not trying to be negative but it's really not worth the time. On the plus side, the skis look clean on the inside!
 
Hey no problem at all lol I hate the trailer but it's necessary for now and came with the package. All I want is a way to secure the machines to the trailer for transporting and winching them onto it if I use it for quick tests. It will be more for transporting or storage until I find a real trailer.
These may be flip and sell machines after I get through the full inspection but might keep the xpl.
Also just picked up a 98 xpl for free :p
Runs good but mainpipe cooling line clogged and it got hot around the cone and melted the foam a bit. Easy fix hopefully.

Thinking of selling the 97 and keeping the xpl's

Frame isn't very thick at all. It's likely I'll have to use the tongue or another anchor point underneath and a pulley.
There are tiedown points in the back but pretty weak.
 
Great Thread !! Keep it going. I'm gonna be working on a 98 XPL. Gonna be interesting for me. I got a good bit of parts with this thing a few engine cases, a crank, but also some brand new seadoo stuff. I'm not sure the engine cases and engine parts are any good. Cool. I have no idea what that head, pipe and airbox is from. Definitely not stock.
 
Well went nuts today.

Bought a good galvanized double trailer. Ready to go and just needs inspection and plate for $875

Yeah its going to get some attention and a new deck. Then probably sell. Not sure. But that means I need to find another trailer for the other xp or sell one quick.
I just hate to sell something I haven't gone through completely.

Seems to be the time of year to get them.

I'm just picking up a plate today for the new trailer. Trying to figure which of the 3 machines to put on it.
 
So the saga contunues
Pull the pump off the 951. Seized... no wear ring and chewed up veins, hardly anything to the impeller left.
Pulled it apart and pulled the bearings.
Think its rebuildable...

Got the engine to crank. Well clunk. Pulled the plugs. Nothing but a fountain of water.

Cleared it out and fogged it hard.
Got it to start and purged so much water out lol. (No driveshaft attached to the engine)
Pulled it out just to run it without a pump.

Ran pretty good. Not noisy at all... responds good. I think it got warm enough to burn the water out. And fogged hard again.
 
I just wish I had a pump I could have put on it so I could run it longer
But the bearing in the back where the two drive shafts meet is almost non-existent from the previous owner pushing too much grease into it and the bearings being ejected
Luckily I happen to have an entire unit to replace it with well it's from an 97 XP so maybe it will work
 
I can guarantee that a 951 sitting with water is a time bomb. It will let go quickly and horrifically.
 
Yeah I know but trying to suppress that little voice.
I'll likely build this one for me. And let go of one of the others.
 
I have engine parts for the 951 but looking at the box of parts none appear worthy of installing in a rebuilt engine. I'm about the throw the whole box away.
 
Let's see what's in the box!

I know the cases would be destroyed if I ran it. So I'm looking into rebuilt costs. Replace or rebuild is around the same price.
 
I just did some research. I like rebuilding the engines myself but dang for the prices I see.... that have some good stuff out there with a warranty. As long as you don't get raped with bad core charges.

What do shops charge to remove and replace an engine in something like a 97 GTX? It is a lot of work and the alignment as well. Ball Park Price ??

All of the rebuilders use aftermarket parts. To flip or for casual riding the rebuilds are probably fine. However if you ride hard, especially in an XP or have any performance parts at all go full OEM rebuild.

The last key to a long lived 951 is keeping water out of it and religiously fog after every ride.

Yeah if this is a keeper, I'll do it myself and im always fogging. I buy by the case now lol.
 
Hmmmm.... you guys are making up my mind for me. :) Hell if I'm gonna keep this 951 if it is that kind of a pain in the butt.
