Hi everyone, I opened this account a few months back to ask a question about a boat i was interested in purchasing, but never got it. Anyways last week we got a 96 speedster the boat seems to be in good shape but I have some questions. The boat didn't come with a manual and this is our first boat.

1. What kind of oil does this boat take?

2. The beeper that goes off when you put the key on, what other functions does that beeper go off for. when the boat is full usually towing the tube with more the 1/2 throttle it sounds like the beeper is going off in a loud constant siren like noise. Any ideas what that could be?

3. The fuel gauge does not work, I think it is the sending unit is this expensive to buy a new one or hard to find? and is it hard to change?

4. how hard is it to add a tachometer? what type of ignition do these engines use, can I use a automotive tach?

5. and Lastly how can I get more power? its a single engine 85hp rotax engine.

Sorry for all these questions and such a long list, any help on any of these questions would be great!

1. The regular Bombardier rotax oil.

2. Careful is probably overheating.

3. I think is usually the unit in the fuel tank that is at fault. Don’t know much about it but if you search i am sure you can find how to repair it.

4. No idea

5. I think you are out of luck on that one.

1) As above

2) If it’s beeping under load… it’s overheating. Check your cooling system before you kill the engine.

3) The float in the sending unit is bad. Check ebay for a new style float… it will fix your problem.

4) It’s easy to add a tach… but you should use a seadoo tach. Check ebay for one. Any of the PWC tach’s will work… and the wiring in already in the boat. Just plug it in, and it will work. (I put one I mine)

5) If you have a single 720 engine (85hp) then you don’t have a speedster. (they had 2 engines) you have a sportster. You can add a pipe, and a higher compression head… but the best mod you can do is to put in a Skat-Trak “swirl” impeller. It will let you hook up better, and pull harder. But, since you may be over heating… you may have an engine that is ready to die, and isn’t making much power. Look into that before trying to add any power to it.

well the over heating would only happen when towing a heavy tube with a heavy person and the boat at or over its max capacity. and the beeper would only go off when making tight left turns under high load. what should I check with the cooling system

I am wondering if overheating is normal under the high stress?

I have the same boat, I drive the piss out of the thing pullig etc.. and I had to replace my overheat sensors but they would sound even when the boat engine was off, so I am assuming they were faulty but your situation sounds like they are fuctioning as designed.

Overheating is not normal. It could be a bad sensor... but check it out before you kill the engine.

Hey JamesC put your boat info in your avatar like a majority of us.. It allows us to know what boat or ski your talking about...

As for your over heating.. It sounds like a sensor due to the situation you described .... under load.. or perhaps debris preventing full cooling..
Id flush your cooling system regularly and backwards to see if you can clean it out, and then test your tps sensors...
