new guy and surprise I need help

I have a 96 gtx that wont go over 24 mph even though it turns 6400 rpms or more. It has a new wear ring , impeller, and prop. Also the top ends just been rebuilt within the last 30 hrs of use. Its ran fine since I got it and this weekend it just wont go over 24 mph. Any suggestions on where to start would be great. We did a compression test today at it had over 140 psi on both cylinders.

did you check the shaft above the grate?

I'm thinking a fist full of tightly wound weeds, I had the same problem and that was the solution.


2nd thing may be the carbon seal if not the weeds.

The next thing I would check is the carbon seal it's part of the drive system, part no. 8.

Thanks for the quick response everyone is there any way to verify this or just start tearing in to it .And is this something I should do myself or take it to a shop. And yes I did check the shaft and prop and found only one little blade of grass about 4 inches long. Again thanks for the help.

I can't fully answer you on that but it seems easy from the posts I've read.
Try putting carbon seal in the "search the forum" box and read for yourself.

I've never tried this, but Tony (Dr Honda) swears by it. Pull back the bellows and put a blob of waterproof grease on the carbon seal, if this fixes the problem temporarily its the carbon seal. Tony's one of the smartest guys on this forum.

It was either the reverse bucket dragging to low or bad fuel, tied the bucket up out of the way and cleaned the fuel tank and added 93 octane no ethanol fuel, and it going strong again, got it up to 46 mph with a strong head wind .:hurray:

QUESTION - Is 93 octane ok for 2cycle engines? Will it help?
No ethanol seems like a good idea but is it worth the added expense?

it is a very good thing and it helps eliminate pre detonation in your fuel to me it is always worth the extra 20 cents

If you can get ethanol free gas buy it. Due to Govt. mandates it's practically an endangered species. Can't get it here within a 50mi. radius.

no he fixed his problem we are just dragging out the thread for some reason ....... he just asked about ethanol free gas and if its good to use .... but anyways i decided to switch careers since golf is a little less strain on my back so i should live a little longer .... and it dosent require roids evryday
