Need help with Spark Plugs 97 GTX

Hey I just recently acquired a 97 GTX about a month ago. Been working on it getting it ready replacing a lot of cosmetic things etc. I decided to change the spark plugs today to new BR8ES plugs. I gapped them to the factory specs which was between .020 and .024 I put them at about .022
The ski was running fine since I have had it. Haven't been taken it out on the water but have been randomly cranking it up on the trailer for about 20 seconds or so, putting it on the hose maybe twice for a minute. It idles at around 3000RPMS

The plugs that I pulled out today were B8ES plugs and they were gapped at about .032 which is over the Sea Doo specs listed for this GTX. I put in the new NGK plugs that I gapped to .022 and fired her up. It ran really rough idling at about 1500RPM on the trailer and had the warning light going off on the info center. Now I know since it is on the trailer it should be idling around 3000 since there is no load.
I pulled the plugs back out and gapped them a little further to about .028 and installed them back. fired them up and it ran at just about 2200 rpm. No warning lights this time. Put it on the hose and ran it for a minute and it was consistent.

What is the correct gap to put on these plugs. Should I just put the b8es plugs back in? Is it ok to run at .032?

Any help would be great.

Hi, and welcome to the Seadoo forum.

The correct plug is BR8ES and the gap should be between .020 and .024, so .022 is perfect. You really can't tell much running it on the hose, you need to take it to the lake. The hose connection is really meant for flushing the motor, you shouldn't run it more than a couple of minutes tops. I don't run mine any longer than a minute.

i understand all that and I don't run the hose longer than a min, but it should still idle around 3000RPM's if the plugs are gapped correctly right? gapped at point .022 it was running really rough bouncing around the 1500RPM level. I should be able to run it on the trailer for about 20-30 seconds and it has been idling at 3000 with the old plugs. with the new plugs it literally went down to 1500 and it was the only thing that changed.
any ideas why? Basically I am trying to get it right so went I go take it to the lake it isn't a wasted trip and it will run correctly if you know what I mean.

Put the old plugs in there and see if it goes back to the 3000 rpm. Sounds to me like either you need to trim a little off of the spark plug wire and put it back in the boot, or maybe you have a bad spark plug. Sounds like it's running on one cylinder

Non- resistor plugs wreak havoc with the Seadoo MPEMS, why you may ask , ok even if you didn't ask I will tell you why. The resistors in the plugs are there to suppress RF signals RF stands for Radio Frequency, the Seadoo MPEM trys to read these signals, when it cannot read them it just shuts the ski down completely.

How do I know all of this , first hand experience, that's how. A customer brought me two 97 XP's that had just been tuned up by another shop , both skis were still in warranty, my business partner at the time who was supposed to know what he was doing took the skis to the dealer and had them swap out the MPEM's, the units would get on plane then shut down, you could restart them by removing the lanyards and putting them back on. After the MPEM's were replaced the problem was still there.

Ok I said you had your chance, now it's my turn, I pull the spark plugs to check and see if the ski is losing spark when it dies, what do I see B8ES spark plugs, I replace them with BR8ES plugs, we drop them in the water and the problem is fixed, moral of this story , do not run non-resistor plugs in a Seadoo newer than 1995 , you will have issues, the warning lights coming on are one of those issues. Tune in next week when you hear the crust old jetski technician say : Hey is that water in my bilge or did somebody take a piss in there !

This may be a dumb question but do I need to unhook the wires to take the boot off and trim them. Or can I leaved them hooked up to the coil.

You do not need to remove them from the coils. I think the boots unthread from the wires if you are looking to trim the wires or replace the boots.

Ok just didn't want to get shocked or screw up the electronics somehow. I put the old plugs back in. It ran correct at first then when I cranked it again it went back to running around 1500 or so. I'm thinking it's not getting a good connection so I will trim the wire in the morning.
