I recently bought a 1997 seadoo xp with 787 rotax with a bad starter solenoid. I replace solenoid and been out with it a couple times. When I shut the seadoo off, I hear a fan noise? My dad says it's a exhaust fan for gas fumes and it only turns off if I hit the kill switch 2 times. I took it out today and the noise would not go away for me to start jet ski again. So I disconnected the battery and reconnect it. Now the starter keeps cranking? I kept playing with the battery and now there is no power to jet ski?

Okay I been messing with it tonight. It the starter that keeps running running after jetski is shut off. I pull the starter solenoid out of its box and it shut off? And ideas where to start?

Test to see if there is 12v at the trigger wire of the solenoid. If so, you have a stuck start button or bad MPEM. If not, you have a bad solenoid and it is staying stuck closed.

All of this is assuming the solenoid is wired properly from when you installed it.

Okay thank you. What's is a MPEM?

More or less, it's the "brain" of the jetski. A sealed, non-repairable unit where all the electronics go into it and all the signals come out of it, example all the sensors, speedometer, etc... I can't say how much your specific MPEM might cost, but I've seen numbers in the $250 to $350 range. Some are more rare, and therefore more expensive, than others.

You can destroy your MPEM by doing things like applying 12 VDC power to the battery while it is connected to the Seadoo. Always recharge your battery off-system. Other people sort of "poo-poo" the risk of this, but I'd rather be a nervous nellie and not have to drop $300 on a part I might have preserved if I had simply taken the battery out of the Seadoo.

Is your start button all gummy and trashed-out? It's possible it's pushing constantly on the waterproof switch underneath it. It's also possible your solenoid is shot. That's like a $25 part, so if somethings broken, you want it to be that. Starters are in the $200 range. MPEMs in the $300 range. So hope that if it's broke, the part that's bad is one of the cheap ones.

EDIT***

I'll also add that if you are going to work on it yourself, it would be a really good idea to download the Parts Catalog for your particular model & year Seadoo.

These skis do not have a blower like a boat to remove exhaust gasses as your dad said.
Was the solenoid you bought aftermarket or an OEM one?

I assume we've checked for a bilge?

I've also seen brand new but bad solenoids more than once, actually a bad new solenoid on my buddy's boat cost him an extra $300 in diagnostic work because he assumed it worked because it was new. Only after the 2nd mechanic came out and tested the obvious first was he able to locate the problem.

I paid 30 dollars for the part at a local store that sells toys. This is what I found out so far. I took it out again and seemed like everything was going good for a while. After a while the starter kept running after shutting it off. The first few time I was able to hit the kill switch 2 times and shut off the starter (wasn't engaged). When I pulled up to the dock, I could not get the starter to turn off after I shut off the motor. Starter kept running without being engaged to flywheel. I pulled every fuse including the one next to starter solenoid
So I had to disconnect battey. But if I reconnect it, the starter will engage to fly wheel but not let the engine fire up?

See if it gets 12v at the trigger wire with the lanyard on and the START button pressed.

To test it, you can apply 12v to the trigger wire pin. It should engage the solenoid.

99% chance that $30 solenoid is bad. Some things on these skis need to be OEM and the solenoid is one of them.

I had a cheap amazon solenoid die within weeks of buying it. The spring was messed up and the contacts just stayed together. I am sure you got a bad one too. The test is simple. Without your battery hooked up, just use a meter or a powered test light and test continuity between the two big posts on the solenoid. If you get continuity, it is bad.

Or you can unplug the connector (Trigger) wires from the solenoid and then hook up the battery. If the starter motor spins, the solenoid is bad.

Yep,, do this,,, If it spins the solenoid is stuck closed. If not, then you have a START button or MPEM issue.

I'm pretty sure it's the solenoid because it only functions right every time I smack the black box lol. And my seadoo is bogging out at low rpm. When going slow, the exhaust sounds like it's misfire and making a popping noise until I get open the throttle up
