This is my first time changing out a wear ring. I bought a white ring from SBT, cleaned the pump and installed a frozen ring in the pump with ease. Is that new ring supposed to be tight to the pump? There is no play in the ring but it will turn. I just finished putting the pump back on, i figured that would hold the ring tight. Did I mess up or is there a chance everything is okay?

Wear Ring

Hi,

When I installed my new wear ring it was pretty tight, I used the freezer method also, and had to use a piece of 2x4 and a mallet to seat the ring.

Have you re-installed the impeller, if so does it turn freely, and not touch the wear ring? I think the specifications is no more than .40?, somebody correct me if this is wrong. The closer the better as long as it doesn't touch the wear ring.

If you're o.k. I would go ahead and install the pump back on the ski. The original design had a foam gasket between the ski and the pump. What I did was use a little marine grade silicone caulk (not too much, if you ever want to get the pump off again), between the wear ring seal and the ski.

If you do this, between the silicone and the pressure against the ski, I don't think there is any way the wear ring will rotate inside the pump.

Anyone else have input on this???

Correction

The space between the impeller and the wear ring should be no more than
.040".

When you put the pump back on the boat, it should push the lip on the wear ring into the hull and stop it from spinning.

My last one went in pretty easy and I worried about it. I popped it out and put a little loctite on it (will regret it when it is time to replace it :().

But when putting it back on the boat, it presses into the neoprene seal and would keep it from moving anyway.

thanks

I appreciate the responses. I am taking it up to gaston this weekend, at least once I replace the starter solenoid. It seems like it is always something to tinker on. I will let you know how it does.
