Iam about to buy a GTX Limited 215 hp ,the only problem is it does not run due to seller stating that a unit called the mpem is burned out he has told me that it costs about 700 to 800 dollars to replace plus fitting.
I was reading through some of the forums and came across things such as the ECM and the ECU and would like to no before i take the ski to seadoo for repair if these units would need to be replaced if you replace the mpem .
Also iam concerned that i will lose the hr reading ect by doing this and if by using the log book can sea doo put correct number of hrs ect back on SKI .
I do not want to walk into seadoo blind and be taken for a ride .

Thank you to any one that can help ,i am new to this site so i hope that iam writing this in the correct section of this site if not could some one please tell me where iam ment too do so.

thanks

Mpem, ecm....

I would be very leary about purchasing a 4-TEC that is not running.

Let's see if I can just get the "meat" out here for you. This engine is a very, highly technically advanced engine. It's controlled by the EMS (engine managment system) using the MPEM (multi purpose electronic module) and the ECM (electronic control module).

The ECM is powered by the MPEM when you attach the lanyard cap, which is directly powered by the battery. The MPEM's function is to interpret infomation from all the sensor inputs, distribute information, ignition timing control, engine rpm limiter, injection control and others like the DESS (digital electronic security system).
The ECM provides the proper map for optimum engine operation in all conditions. It also stores the fault codes, the vehicle hours and information as to the running conditon of the motor.

The ECM is the central nerve center of the engine management system. It receives input from about 12 sensors reading the inputs, makes the computations, uses pre-determined parameters and sends the proper signals to the outputs for controlling the engines adjustments for optimal power and efficiency.

All malfunctions are recorded in the ECM. If the MPEM is bad, it's recorded and if you have to replace it, then you'll not lose all the important information stored in it.

My problem is, if the MPEM is out like he says it is, how does he know it? If you are considering buying this ski, I'd consider taking it to a Seadoo shop and have it connected to a VCK (vehical communication kit) to the B.U.D.S. (Bombardier utility diagnostic system) and let them do a run through the computer systems to see if they can find a reason for the failure.

This system/engine is a very expensive engine to have repaired if there is something wrong electronically.............

I'd be very cautious to this idea that only the MPEM needs replacing, because if it does, I'd want to know why!............

mpep not working

Thank you for your help on this matter , i was told that he had put jump leads to start it as it has a a flat battery , and that he had a auto sparky look at it.
i am glad that if it is the mpem that needs replacingf i will not loose all the important info like hrs ,sevice history ect and it held in ecu it was a big cocern for me.
Many thanks

Hi Seadoosnipe,

I have phoned the owner who is selling ski again and explained i had recieved some advice that it might not only the mpem that is gone but also the Ecu or the ecm not that i no the difference sorry new to jet skies.

He had phoned me back and said he was not certain if the other units were damaged but would price the ski according to damage on the ski.

Just after reading your repley to me was not sure to get the ski if both the mpem and ecm are damaged .The ski from my knowleadge has 27 hrs on it last serviced at 10 hrs from seadoo and is priced around 3000 dollars cheaper than the the same ski on the market without damage to electrics.

Many thanks

walk awy.....I mean "RUN AWAY"..
Find another ski, that you can water test, due compression,..etc, all that stuff. Not say'n 4-strokes bad, but if you leaned toward the 2-stroke ski's, more of possible chance, down the road, if something was to happen, your able to fix yourself, say'n something major, via...forum.:)
