Hi guys,

So some of you may have read my fathers(BigFish) last post about 2 weeks ago about him and me rebuilding our top end of our 1996 gtx.. awesome time great project just got it all buttoned up in time for memorial day weekend and had it out ran it through the break in period and now it runs mint! Were really excited about that but now we want another.. lol

so we found one in our price range and we'd like to grab it but it says that it has a problem turning over. The owner says hes already replaced the starter and the battery and that when he goes to turn it over WITH the spark plugs installed it wont turn over. But if he takes the spark plugs out and goes to turn it over WITHOUT the spark plugs in it, it will turn over just fine. Not sure what this problem is ive read a few other threads on hydro-locking and what not but figured i'd ask myself.

Thanks guys.

Odds are, if it cranks well with the plugs pulled that the has bad cables or connections, a bad starter, and or a bad battery. bad connection can NOT make a new battery or new starter any better than what was in there... Connections are critical.

I would load test the battery, no matter if it is new or not. You need to start somewhere with something you KNOW that is good or bad...

X2 on the above. It would be great if the guy has the OEM starter with it. Personally I would "troubleshoot" it in front of the guy, that will only make him stick to his number. Make your negotiations base on it won't run.

Another possible issue... A rock jammed in the impeller. I got a 95 GTS that did the same, and I looked at the impeller area a found the wear ring torn up, and taking it apart found the rock.

Still have it..

That was our theory which was that some gear down near the starter is jammed up somehow and that seems like to big a job for us but we will keep that in mind

So basically its most likely a bad connection somewhere in there?

This is ONLY true of the battery is good and the new battery is good.

I installed a Gel Cell battery that started my ski once at home. Hit the ramp and it would not even crank. So, I launched my other ski for the day. Charged it when I got home and it still would not crank the engine. It was BRAND NEW,,,

My point is, you can't guess. You MUST do something to prove that something is good or bad. Once you find a good or bad, then you can start to solve things.

If you can turn it by hand, you can measure how far down the piston is. If they are equal then it is likely you have no damaged rods.

if you can turn it by hand then you prob dont have a bent rod that is binding motor. No?

If it turns over easy by hand with plugs out then it is likely 4 things.
1) Bad battery, even new crap batteries will cause the symptoms especially Walmart EverStarts.
2) Bad cables or connections.
3) Bad starter.
4) Bad starter solenoid.

Do NOT boost or jump these as you will fry the electronics. The only safe way is with a good 12V battery with the car not running and no boost boxes.
