Well, as some as you know I was out last weekend breaking in the new top end on the xp. That went great, but after cool down and riding again, going along at about 30 she just shut off like someone pull the dess key. We all thought the ski lost spark. So not being very handy myself, I run the xp to the local seadoo dealer. At first they thought I lost spark also, but the ski does have spark. When they pulled the carbs off they found my rotory valve with a chunk missing from it and the rotory valve plate with a nice deep groove the whole way around. So im being told a needle bearing, and c clip came apart in the top end!!! So after a new top end and about an hour and a half of riding, the whole motor now has to come out!!!! More or the story to come, and pics also!!!!! This sucks!!!!!

Sorry to hear about that. I'm curious how the C clip got jammed in the rotary valve... Must have been pushed by the crank?

Was the top end under warranty?

i assume that the shop doing the work now is the one that put the top end on? have you been in contact with the shop that did the top end about paying for the carnage that has ensued as a result of their work?

Until I see a Pic... I don't think it's a wrist pin clip. Most likely, the clip on the rotary shaft failed. It's VERY hard for a wrist pin clip to get back into the RV. Most likely... because of internal air flow... it would beat up the piston, and wind up into the top-end, or out the exhaust.

Unfortunately... this is the problem with putting a new top-end on a 16 year old lower end. But... with that said... if it is the RV clip... you can probably salvage the engine. Clean it out, replace the RV shaft, RV, and cover... and it may run again.

But... like I said... need some pics.

Doc., part of my new top end was they told me I needed a new rotory gear, which I was told was changed. In any event the ski is in the shop, and the 787 is coming out, and either being rebuilt or a new sbt 787 is going in. Just waiting to see how bad the damage is. As for the shop that worked on my top end, no they do not have the ski. There is more to the story which will come out when the motor is apart in the next day or two. The person who worked on my ski is a member on this forum, and to be fair I need to know exactly what failed first. So now the the question is rebuild my 787, or drop in a new SBT. I worry about the cheep bearings they use on the crank. My riding season here in Ohio is very short and i want my ski back A.S.A.P.

SBT does quality work. they have a rig where they can run their rebuilds for hundreds of hours straight to make sure that the parts they are using will hold up. remember that you get the same engine with a 1 year or 2 year warranty, so it is in their best interest to ensure that the majority of their engines outlive the warranty.

Had same thing happen to my 92XP. Waiting on parts. Where u at in ohio? I am in lorain. Should be out on lake erie in 1-2 weeks :)

Tell us the story once you can. I would hate to think that a member here is doing poor work. But this a reason I don't do regular rebuilds in my shop. It's too unpredictable. If I swap in an SBT engine... then a failure isn't my fault. (lol).

Keep us up to date.

Jason, launch from lakeshore park in Ashtabula, tow ski behind my searay to our local sandbar to play. I will keep everyone up to date, once I find out what went wrong....... still would like to know what people think of sbt motors....... Rob.

I would like to know your towing method, tried a few times when we had the XP's with limited success. They seemed to wander and seemed very unstable. We will have friends over next weekend with two machines and would like to tow them out to the lake, already know about pinching off water lines and would appreciate your input. We would tow with our pontoon and it makes a nice haven when everyone is tired.

My wrist pin clip failed last week, and just as Dr. Honda described it did not make it into the RV. It did beat up the piston and cylinder head and what's left of it is currently lodged in the top of the piston. I was tempted to just do a top end, but the savings isn't that great compared to having the whole thing rebuilt.

Ok so a new SBT 787 with 2 year warranty is going in the XP, along with new oil lines, and the carbs will be rebuilt again with oem KITS. So the shop that has my ski has sent me a bunch of photos of the poor work that was done on my top end. Can anybody walk me through how to post up the pics. Thank you, Rob.

rob, sorry bout all the trouble you're havin .
the pik thing kicked my butt for a while, then a friend turned me on to dropbox.when i take a pik with my phone,it automatically sends it to my dropbox folder, that is flying around in the air as we speak.so when i want to post a pik,i right click the pik, copy it to my desktop, then (now look above where your letters appear when u start typing a post,or reply,4th icon from the right),click that, then, the insert image box will appear, then choose "from computer",then choose browse, then scroll down till u see the pik that want to post, click on the pik, then click "open".then upload.
i know it seams like a pain,but once u figure it out,itl be a 10sec process.
there are other storage things to have your piks in,but i use drop box.and i had to have my friend show me several times how to do it.
good luck,
troy

Posting pictures here for some reason can be very difficult. I tried links, photobucket and drop box.

For me what finally worked was using TapTalk app and uploading pics from my phone.

sorry, learning to post these pics. here they are..http://s1292.photobucket.com/user/robertbec/slideshow/ As you can see, the fuel filter was installed on the return line, I was told my raves were taken out and cleaned, parts of the old gasket were still on the head, was never fully cleaned off, my head head pipe was over tightened, and cracked, and there was rust in the one cylinder towards the top. This is how my top end was done!!!!!!! Let me know what you think. The ski was only ran for about one hour and thirty minutes for break in on top end.

it looks like you got it figured out, just click on the "img" link and it will copy to your clipboard, then paste it in your message. voila!
brass shavings

rusty cylinder

RAVEs

RV

OK.... Before we get into finger pointing... please give us more details.

1) The brass shavings are clearly from the RV gear that was damaged, when the clip got stuck in the RV. Basically... when the engine is running, and the RV stops... the gear shears.

2) Not sure what we are looking at on the RAVES... but they look normal. Was there damage that I'm not seeing?

3) The "Rusty Cyl's". Do you mean the corrosion in the water jacket?

More Q's:

A) Did you get a picture of the actual clip that jammed the RV, and did you verify that it came out of the wrist pin?

B) Did the shop do the machine work, or did they just install a "Top-end Kit" ??

C) How long did you have it/ride it after the work was done?

Basically... My thoughts are still the same as in post #5. Putting a top end on an old bottom is always a bad idea. Also... if you took it out, and burnt a few tanks of fuel... it's hard to prove the quality of the work. And... if the shop didn't do the machine work... here again... it's hard to place the blame on the guy who installed the parts.

I know you are upset, and I'm not trying to take sides... I just want to get the entire story.

Sorry for the issues.

I think the picture is intended to show the surface rust near the top of the bore, the raves are because he said the shop claimed to have cleaned the raves.

Dr. Honda, Forum member who did my top end on my ski told me, and I have the bill, my raves were totally cleaned, the ski was ran for about one hour and thirty minutes. Forum member told me my raves look like I over heated the ski....The rust I am talking about is at the top of the bore, I was told they were sent out to machine shop....I was told my rv gear was noisey, I needed a new one, I said go ahead change it out, its on my bill, the fuel filter was for the gas coming from the tank to the carbs, why would you filter the gas going back to the tank.....I do have a photo of clip jammed in the gear. more photos are to come. This was the first ride on the top end. Forum member also left old gasket behind, and put new one over it!!!!! The clip came from the PTO side. If you look at my last post above with the photos from photo bucket, you can also see they cracked my exhaust head..... And just left it...........let me know what you think. Rob.

The raves look fine still, your problem is not the raves. The cylinders look to have been bored but I can not tell by your pictures. They were at the least honed because I see no glazing. The rv gear even if new would still shear if something was bound up in there. Did {edit to protect others] do the work? I am sure if you contact him he will help out. As for the rust on the top of the bore, if the shop just took the head off and was not careful water from the head or even in the waterjackets in the jugs could have gotten on it and machined bare metal will get surface rust fast. I do however see either permatex or the equivalant on the exhaust though, that should have been a fresh gasket.
