Hello, i recently was given a project 1997 seadoo gtx. I am very excited to become more experienced working on seadoo products!! I graduated from marine mechanics institute orlando fl in 2007. Since then i have worked on zero pwc out in the feild. So i am taking notes lol. This gtx pops the 5 amp fuse as soon as i connect the battery cables. Thus i cannot perform any service specs checks untill i can get her to accept power! Thanks for having me seadoo owners see ya in the forums i guess?

Hi and welcome to the SeaDoo forum.

Unfortunately it usually means a bad MPEM. Try PM'ing minnetonka4me, he not only has good used ones but he can test the one you have.

welcome to the forum,
i'm a fellow Cape Corallian.... off Chiquita and CC parkway... where are you located.?

also... I'm 99.9% sure I have a good mpem, it came off a 98 spx if I remember, I was keeping it as a spare for my 96 xp but I just sold it, so I no longer need a backup...

if you want we can maybe hook up and you can swap them out, it will at least tell if the mpem is the problem or not... but we might want to wait for somebody that understands mpems better to confirm that this procedure makes sense (swap mpem's vs looking at other sources as to why the fuse is blowing), I'd very much rather NOT have your ski blow my mpem :(

ps.. the question itself should be posted in the 2 stroke section, 99% of the regulars don't visit the meet & greet pages

I also might be able to offer some general help, i'm no mechanic by any stretch, but I know just enough to be dangerous :)

i'm sort of ski-less right now, the only one I have left is up for sale, but it looks like i'm going in halfsies on a boat next week, but if you'd like to get out on the water, I might be game.

ya I had a garage full, actually two garages full, I had 7 ski's just 4 months ago... the neighbor JUST left for the summer not back till thanksgiving !!! neighbor was down for 60 days, so it was a mad scramble to unload stuff before he returned, I hate keeping anything in the back yard except maybe a spare trailer.

but i've been busy as balls... enjoying the little break right now...

Sold the 00 GTX
Sold the 97 XP
stripped down the 99 GTX (to build the rx)
stripped down the 98 GSX (to build the rx)
stripped down the 98 SPX race ski.
sold my personal XP to a guy over by you.
the RX is for sale
and I have a very strict "no ride" policy on ski's that are for sale (its killing me !)
tried Kyaking.. oh my goddddd, that was boring...

shopping for a 4 stroke, as you know, then this boat thing came up, so I figured I might try boating for a little bit. and its just small enough that it fits diagonally in the neighbors garage... I already measured lol. the only problem is the boat tops out around 50mph, and only seats 4. and honestly, if I'm really serious about boating, i'd like to get into something that will hit 60+ like a nice bass boat or something that will hold a few more people so I can enjoy a full day on the water w/o tripping over my passengers, if that makes sense.

honestly I love the water, i've had the bug for about 5 years now, so every weekend that I don't get out there really irk's me.

Damm!
I see the blue flamed ski still for sale?
I thought it was sold?

Is boat a seadoo?

boy we're hijacking the thread lol, but wth, its meet & greet :)

no the flame ski is for sale, and i've had ZERO bites, but its priced pretty high, I might drop the price a tad.

the boat is a little boston whaler, nice boat, but not EXACTLY what I had in mind since I'm not into fishing... I kind of told him that we need to take it out on Sunday for a few hours and see how I feel about it.

The wife wants one of those deck boats, but they're pretty pricey...

Sorry OP.
We get sidetracked when something else comes into light....................

Outboard is still better than inboards and Boston Whalers are built to last.

Id spend the $20 to send the MPEM to Nick. (Minnetonka4me) While he has it plugged in if you want any additional keys for it that would be the time. At that point you will know!

However, a simple check of the small gauge 12v red power wire that is in the rear electrical box with a fuse on it- check and see if it is shorted to ground. Unlikely but you never know.

Thanks guys!

Yup I can test the MPEM to be absolutely sure, and if its bad I can program the old key to the new MPEM.

Welcome to the best Seadoo site out there!

If I can help with anything just let me know.

my MPEM , which I pulled last night , apparantly is w/o key anyway (well, there were 3 keys tangled up in the mess, two which were in BAD shape, so i'm going to send it off to tonka for keying in the next day or two and get rid of it.

Confirm that the cables are going to the correct terminals on the battery....

Easy mistake to do as the batteries are normally poorly marked...

Thanks for the help
