Maiden voyage fail/carbon ring leak

Hey Now! I had a 96 spx way back. It is a great ski and actually does have decent power haha. I loved the trouble free 717, dang near bullet proof

LOL, didn't mean to throw the model under the bus.... it is what it is... a great all around ski...

But when I think of a 96 spx, I think of "fun, reliable, bulletproof, economical" I do NOT think of "crisp, powerful, bat out of hell"

You might not need even a 1/4 turn to get there, doesn't take much. I take a small terry cloth shop towel and get it wet, wring the excess out and microwave the towel for like 40 seconds, careful because that towel is going to be damn hot depending on the micro you have.

I lay that over the boot to heat and soften it up, usually do the first one and add a second one a minute or so later. Makes compressing it much easier.

Also,
What tricks do you guys use to pull the SS ring back so I can get that c clip in there? I think mine is so tight that I really need to use two hands (or I'm just a weakling)
Is there some sort of trick? It's like I'll need 3 hands.. Two to pull the ring back and another to install the c clip

Usually a friend works pretty good in this situation lol

Grease the shaft and o-rings. It's a one hand job pulling that back.

Thanks bob, sounds great. I'll give that a try.

And Spimothy, besides renting a beat up rental Yamaha in 2007 and riding 2 up, and riding one IN 1996 while I was a young teen, the ONLY ski I was able to compare it to, is this one before all of the repairs, so that's my bat outta hell and crisp I was referring to.

Reynolds,
I love on an island and So all of my friends are anywhere from 25-50 minute drives to my house, and all my neighbors are basically old retirees who even cringe at the sound of my ski, let alone having one come over to offer assistance..

Racerxxx,
Thanks for that!

No worries. When you have stuff apart that is the time to make it fit and operate properly. Working in a machine shop environment and building equipment for the last 20 years you get accustomed to making things fit correctly. I always think of the next guy who has to service the machine. If I put it together with a hammer, he's going to need a bigger hammer to get it apart.

Sorry 96spxpos. I have been following this thread. But I didn't remember the leak is at the carbon seal surface or where the orings are?
