low speed /rpm's?

Let me preface this by saying I am NOT very mechanically inclined. What else is new...

I just bought a 2000 gtx millenium. It supposedly has 20 hours on a new factory 951 motor. The gage says 149 hrs but I figured that was total time. On inspection the motor looks brand new. Took it out for a test spin and it would not rev higher than 6120 rpm and top speed of about 42mph. I'm pretty sure it is supposed to go faster. I've been reading how the speedos aren't accurate but I think this one is pretty close. I checked the impeller, no nicks or dings and the intake grate?? was clear other than a stone (bit smaller that a golf ball) lodged between two of the "fins". The thing starts right up and will get out of the water with NO hesitation. I got it at a great price (I Hope).

Has new plugs, although they were NGK 9's vs the recommeded 8's. I pulled them and they looked clean.

The gas/oil is only a few weeks old 2-3 according to the previous owners. Which is how long it has been sitting since their last use. Sitting Moored on the lake with no cover if that means anything.

Is it possible that I am using a "learner key"?? Gives 2 beeps... Anyway to check?

Any suggestions before I go pay an arm and a leg at the dealer to diagnose something stupid?

Please dumb your responses down for us mechanically challenged people. Oh and I have very few tools too. Should make things fun huh?

Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for any advice.

Learning keys didn't show up until 2004.

If it's hanging at 6100 rpm... I would make sure the RAVE valves are opening all the way, and that they are hooked up properly. (Make sure none of the hoses came off)

FYI... you should be seeing closer to 6800/6900 RPM, and 55 mph.

agreed. you aren't revving high enough. Carbs, fuel, water reg, RAVEs. not in that order.

I just sold one of those for $2,600 w/trailer and 200 hrs. it hit 6,750ish WOT. 59-61 WOT.

Thank you for that... Lets up the ante a bit. I decided to pull the RAVE apart (saw how to do it in another thread). When I removed the cover on the Left Rave (closest to the front) it was covered in oil... hmmm ok? I took a quick peek at the other, nice and dry. So I proceeded to take apart the rest of the RAVE down to the Guiletine? all covered in oil. I cleaned up most of the oil, still have to try to get what I can out of the housing? Someone said to spray it with carb cleaner?. Before I reassemble and have to do this all over again, oil in the RAVE is bad right? Now what?

OK theres your topic... go. Thanks again.

Upon further further review... I pulled the other RAVE just for fun. Not so clean and dry. Also full of oil once I removed the bellow. Looks like there may be oil in the tubes leading to the solenoid.

Cleaned it all up. The lower spring on the bellow was rotted and basically fell apart. I read somewhere that this could cause oil in the RAVE?? I dunno. Anyway I have the new springs on order. Bellows were dirty but otherwise in great shape. I will reassemble when in and report back Please leave any comments for steps NOT to forget to do.

Again, Thanks for reading and in advance of any help.

I don't want to bust your bubble, but it the gauge says 149 hours that's whats on the ski, the gauge doesn't lie sometime previous owners do. The gauge only counts time when the ski is running.

If you still have grey fuel lines you need to read this thread.

It sounds like you need to rebuild your RAVE valves, probably replace the bellows, the "O" ring and the gasket.

You should also download a service manual, you can download one from this site if you join as a premium member, or google and download one elsewhere.

My new purchase 2002 DI had a learner key and the manual states 35 MPH but nothing about the RPM's. I'm getting
35 MPH and 6400 RPM on what should be the normal key. I didn't have the learner key with me but I'm hoping the
"normal key" has been programmed to be a learner key as well, or for some reason it's been programmed backwards
vs the white key. It's too coincidental that the machine runs great, rave valves were just cleaned and it tops at
35 MPH WOT. Guess I'll know tomorrow...
