Lost Socket under the Engine

Hi All.

I have a 2006 GTX Ltd and was removing the battery for the season when I accidently dropped by socket and it plopped somewhere underneath the engine.

As you all know.... it's impossible to get your hand underneath the engine.

The best I could manage was to sweep my fingers near the front but felt nothing.

I tried using one of those little "grabby" things to feel around for it, and tried a "sweeping" motion to see if I could at least move it to the front so I could grab it.

No Luck.

Anyone have any "tricks" to recover something small that has worked its way under the engine?

Get a magnetic retrieval tool (magnet on the end of a springy extension handle). Then go fishing with it... it'll take a couple tries but you'll usually get it to click-on to the wayward socket or wrench. We've all been there, done this.

You can also try tilting your trailer up as much as possible to see if the wayward socket (in your case) will roll towards the stern where you can more easily retrieve it. Just, don't hurt yourself!

Worst case, leave it... it'll work it's way to the stern area after a few rides you'll find it.

I lost a 10 mm open end wrench tried all the sweeping / magnetic fishing things you could think of. Thought it was gone forever - an offering to the bilge gods.

I pulled the ski a few weeks back and there it was in the bilge by one of the bailers.

Roll it upside down, it'll fall out (kidding! )

I'd use my magnetic pickup tool, this has a magnet on the end of a bendable copper rod, just manipulate the rod to the shape you need and keep it on the bilge bottom. Won't pick up stainless steel items, of course.

Ps. While you're in there I'm missing a 10 millimeter shorty open end and a 10 millimeter deep well 1/4 socket, harbor freight blue. I will pay for shipping
