losing the Passenger

Howdy Y’all I’m new to the forum I ride Lake Austin and Lake Travis. Recently my wife and I loaded the Ski down with new speakers and an amp which can beat a lot of the sound systems on boats. While riding my wife refuses to hold on to me she will only hold on to the back handles with gloves on. I threw her off the other day and was glad I turned around because she wasn’t there I didn’t get to far away so it wasn’t a big deal but if I didn’t turn to see she was gone I would have never known. I was wondering if anyone has come up with a quick disconnect system that gives the driver a tug when your passenger flies off? I use to hear a curse word fly when she was falling but know all I can hear are tunes and she controls those. Thought about putting the key on her but when she falls off at high speeds it’s nice to get to her quickly and not make her swim to the ski so that’s dumb and out of the question. If anyone has an idea of something that can pop me in the back to tell me she’s gone that would be awesome. Thanks!

Moving this to the 4-tec PWC forum.

Probably the easiest and best way would be to connect another line to the lanyard and connect the other end to your wife, that way if she falls off the ski would stop. BTW, I've always thought one of the best things about riding 2up on a PWC or motorcycle, is to have your GF or wife hang on to you while riding, maybe it's just me.

Just keep throwing her off and stranding her until she agrees to hold onto you like every other woman does. Sooner or later she will learn her lesson. I would never let my wife ride 2 up with me without her holding onto me tight.....

Small gauge fishing line. Something strong enough that it will pull the key out when she falls but still small enough that it will break and leave the key still clipped to you so you can replace it and retrieve her. Utilize a carabiner or something so she can clip it on and off and she gets on or off the ski.

Or, simply small gauge fishing line attached to you. It will yank and then snap when she falls so you will feel it.

Revo i like your way of thinking. i'll try it out saturday. i would rather not have her wrapped around me for fear of her yanking me off as well. the newer Seadoos have nice rear passenger handles.

My wife holds onto the small vertical straps on my PFD (the ones that the 3 straps pass through) with a few of her fingers.....she gets a good enough grip that she can hold on securely, but she would never be able to pull me off the ski....if she ever was to fall off (she never has) I would certainly feel a strong tug on my PFD and know she was off.....just a suggestion

Your other option is to get your wife a ski of her own so you can ride together but separate....that's what I ended up doing this season because riding 2 up gets pretty annoying and is not as fun....now it's great going out together and riding our own skis

I have been thinking about this and have come up with a very simple and literally BRIGHT answer.
Much like the lanyard that comes off when we fall off, have the passenger wear the same type of thing only going to a socket you install somewhere logical. But in this case, if they fall off, a light comes on in the dash area.

So, you plug it in and the light is off. When they fall off, the light comes on. Inside the hull, (I'd do it in the glove box) you put an in-line switch that will break the circuit. This will allow you to kill the light when you don't have a passenger.

Or put a working key on both life jackets. Plug the passengers key into he ski. Should the passenger fall off, you can plug in the spare on your jacket, and go retreave the passenger.

I put an extension (snapped two lanyards together) and clipped it to my daughter who rode behind me. So if she fell, the ski turned off. I had the learning key to go back and get her.

Run a string with a clothespin to either you or the lanyard. She falls off and you'd see the clothespin get pulled or disappear.

Other than that I'd say it's her problem. :)

Not a bad idea. i can just toss the learning key in the dry storage so that it's on board for me to turn around to get her.

She doesn't fall off too often when she does it's because I'm full speed and come in sideways on a wave and she's not paying attention. I have a strapless side zip vest so it makes it a little more difficult to grab. i would love to get her a ski but she's afraid to drive. she refuses to go over 15mph and if theres any boats around she will come to a complete stop and wait for them to pass. as a passenger she's great wants to follow yachts get big air. she started wearing football gloves this year so that there sticky on the back handles she's a great crazy passenger horrible drive.

This thread reminds me of something I saw on the road that made me chuckle.

I was driving behind a biker with a black t-shirt. The words on the back of his shirt read "If you can read this, the b***h fell off".

why not fit a kill switch to radio that connects to the passengers pfd. (if passenger falls off radio goes off) SIMPLES

I'm gonna start of saying....don't take offense.

Losing a passenger at speed on our skis is a no-no. It's something to be avoided...people can get hurt coming off at over 60mph.

There's only been two peeps to hang with me during a poker run, riding behind me...my daughter and s-i-l.

Daughter loved it...weighed in at 135 or so...never sat the seat in the rough...used the foot wells and held onto the strap only. Never lost her in 5-6 years of riding.

S-i-L...160 or so...rode one year (when daughter had to work and couldn't make it). After being told one time ...use the foot wells...don't sit the seat in the rough...strap only. He survived...albeit with some pretty good blisters on his knuckles and hands that wouldn't stop shaking for a coupla hrs after we trailered my ski.

Being on the back is not as easy as driving...no handle bars back there...it makes a difference. Hitting waves wrong with a passenger is to be avoided. they are counting on you to making the ride as smooth as possible. I'd know in a sec if I lost my rider...a longer lanyard is a possiblity I guess...but if you're losing riders...in traffic...or in rough water...and don't know it when it happens?....I'm sorry...I ain't ridin with you.
