Looking at a 99 XP Tomorrow

I am in search of the cleanest 99+ XP I can find. I am talking new if possible. The one below is my best candidate right now. I am told its one owner with very little time on it. I am told its shop winterized and wrapped every winter and outside and always covered in the summer. I am also told he has never had any problems with it so nothing has ever been done to it. I guess that includes oil lines. From what I read they swell up and restrict oil. Is this done slowly? Could this motor be dying a slow death? Any help appreciated. Thanks

They don't restrict oil flow... they just rot, and fall off. OR... the filter plugs, and restricts oil.

The engine should be fine, assuming they are burning the right oil. That engine needs a fuel synth, API-TC type oil. So, ask what they are using... and if it's a TC-w3 oil... walk away.

Regardless... the 951 engine has a short life. 200 hr's is about it.

I was told to avoid 97 and 98 so I am looking for 99 and up. Here is what the owner said about the oil.

I was running Sea Doo xps but the stopped making so last year I started running amsoil which is the equilvent to seadoo. Original oil lines yes

I hear it's the best to run. I use Intercepter Amsoil. It's $55 a gallon out the door. Cheap insurance when an engine is $1,200. It's kinda hard to find sometimes. Motor cycle shops may have it, or order it. I have asked my local shop to carry it. They have all the other Amsoil Products.

I ran into a guy at work selling a 951 with 400 hours on it. Said it has never had any motor work!!

That's not very common, but I have seen reports of +300 hrs. Just means it was babied. It really depends on the owners. If they aren't riding super aggressive, and do perfect winterizations... then sure, they can last. But the nature of the parabolic XP's is to ride them hard. SO generally we are seeing engines give up in the 200 hr mark.

I don't run AmsOil... and it's not an API-TC oil. They say it is, but it was never tested. Becsaue of that... I probably won't ever try it in my old 2-strokes.

The person you were talking with is right. The XPS did change, so I picked up a couple cases of the old stuff before it was gone. Once it's used up, I'll be switching over to QuickSilver PWC. It's a known, good, TESTED, API-TC oil.

I'm not saying that Amsoil is bad or anything. But they seem to have a good following, so why not just send a sample of oil in, to get a real certification??

With that all said... I don't think it would be enough for me to pass on that ski. (Assuming the price is right)

NOW......

1) Don't bump your post after only 20~30 min. You did it at 11pm EST, so your audience was starting to go away. (It slows down after 8pm EST)

2) DO NOT PM people asking to look at threads. The only time you should PM someone about a thread, is if it's been longer than 24 hr's without a response.

You agreed to the rules of this forum when you signed up, so if you would like to continue to get help... please obay them. We are very easy going here, but trust me... I get a lot of PM's where people need real help... not just if an oil in good.

That ski is in excellent shape. No paint fade so it was covered and trailer is extra clean also. Looks like they live on the water so there should be no excuses when it comes to water testing. Price is a little high IMO though.

XPS-II changed from a tan color to red, but I think it would be damn near national news if they stopped selling it... it says SEA-DOO on it, and XPS-II. It's red, and I use it...

I just bought 3 gallons on eBay a few weeks ago.

The 97 XP had a 787 - and was under powered for that hull
the 98 was the first year of the 951, it had a single coil ignition and a funky e-box, and oil pump bracket
the 99 was the more standard 951
the 00 closed the front air intakes because they just intook (get it?) water. (I think it was 00)
the 01 changed from a paper gasket to rubber on the exhaust manifold
02 no changes
03 went to a 951 DI - avoid this ski.

so... yea... 99-02.

I bought this one yesterday. It was very dirty from sitting out but as I looked it over I could not find any damage. I test drove it and in choppy water I easily hit 6700-6800rpm. Could have gone more. It's the original motor and no wrench marks on anything in the hull. After about 4 hours of cleaning I think I got a good ski. We will see for sure this weekend. Thanks everyone for the help.

Nice ski. You did good. Now change the gray fuel lines.

As far as the Seadoo oil it is very much still available. I just received a new gallon yesterday.
As SabrTooth said Seadoo changed suppliers from Castrol I think to RedLine but still SeaDoo API-TC full synthetic and compatible with the older stuff too.
