Lean or Rich sensor

hi guys, just a though, as we all know a lean 2-stroke is a dead 2-stroke, so I was wondering what you guys think about placing a Wide-band oxygen sensor in my exhaust and it will tell me whether my mixture is lean or rich and is ALOT more accurate then reading your plugs. Problem is ive never done this with a two stroke and I dont even know if I can drill a hole in the exhaust to fit it in for sea doos with their water insulated exhaust....in other words if anyone knows where it could be drilled I would love to know. Anyone ever done this?
 
While the idea is neat, you're adding a lot of tech and hassle to what is nearly a 20 year old ski...

it's not like anyone's even produced a 2 stroke ski in 10 years...

and once you have the carbs set right, generally to stock, you are good to go.
 
yea I guess your right, im just so paranoid about my ski blowing up because of a lean condition i will just have clean my carbs every few years and watch for hesitation. And pressuize my fuel system to 5 psi my manuel says should make sure i don't have a vacum leak right? My manuel doesnt really specify whyI should pressuirize my fuel system it just claims to prevent fire (obviously) nothing else said about it.
 
I think you are over thinking things. :)

I agree 100%, you know the reason most of us ride these old ski's is because they're cheap and to have fun. Lets face it and old 2-stroke with a few exceptions, are practically disposable. Worst case throw another motor in for 800 to 1000 dollars, and if it's worse than that just buy another ski. I've got a couple of early 787's and I used to worry about not being able to change the counter-balance oil, but I don't even think about it any more.

If you want to worry about a ski, go buy and new $15,000 4-tec or just keep riding, do the routine maintenance, and enjoy your old 2-stroke.

Two strokes are so oil messy I think you would have problems with an o2 sensor anyway. best way to measure lean on a 2-stroke is EGT sensors, but it would be a hassle trying to get them into a jacketed manifold.

I totally understand your concerns though, Is this a fresh engine that replaced another?
 
its not a fresh engine it's just in good condition with 145-146 each cylinder. As for the engines being 800 dollars i assume thats without shipping so im thinking more like 1000+
 
They are around 1000$ with shipping, but when you compare that to the 20,000$ new machines that use a 4-6000$ engine it's cheap. You can rip and 787 out and have a new one in within a few hours
 
I'm not saying $1,000 isn't a lot of money. But to me, it is cheap fun. I love these old 2 strokes and will continue to repair/rebuild mine for as long as parts are available
