I got a 1997 speedster and its running rough I syphind out the old gas because it sat for a year he put stabalizer in it but i didnt trust it. But my rear left motor is always cutting out in nuetral and low power foward. Im thinking maby the carbs just need cleaning but im not sure what is your opinion? also when i first started the motor lots of grey smoke came out, im guessing since its a 2 stroke motor that might be normal since it sat for so long. what do you think i should first try doing to fix this?

Carbs....

yeah, after sitting up for a year, it's a wonder it even runs at all. That just goes to show you the durability of the 717cc, 85 hp Rotax engine. They are pretty reliable engines.
Your Speedster is running the Mikuni BN 38 carbs, if I remember right. But like you said, sitting up a year, your carbs are probably gummed up. First, I'd do a compression test on both engines. After sitting up, that would be a good idea to make sure your rings aren't sticking. Then, I'd pull the carbs. You may not need to rebuild them, just clean them. If your careful taking them apart and not tear a gasket, then you won't need to order a rebuild kit. There is a small filter built into the carbs.......it's about the size of your wife's pinky finger and about 3/8ths to 1/2 long. You'll need to check them and clean them real good.
I recommend only taking off one at a time, or both off one engine and be careful not to mix parts. If you don't disturb the linkages, then you won't have to syncronize. Are you still on oil injection, or do you premix? What kind of oil did you put in the tank or mix with. You can't use any old 2 cycle oil. You have to use a low ash oil..............
Re-post after you find out some more stuff..........you need to do the compression test first!....If you don't have a compression gage, there about $20 bucks at your local Autozone or Advanced Auto Parts......let us know!

thanks for the reply

Im going to go get a guage right now, were do u test the compression? im gonna read over that repair manual. I took it out on the lake today and it dies around 2.3-3rpm only on the rear left motor but if I kind of play with it i can get it up to speeds just like the other motor, but it seems to be .5 high on the rpm if the throttles are exactly the same so im guessing the throttles need a little adjusting. Im tottally satisfied with this boat i only paid 4000 bucs and the guy serviced it yearly and showed me he only had 50 hours on it. The speedomiter dosnt work aswell that will need further investigating. Thanks THIS THING IS GRRRRRREAAAT!!!!.:stupid:

Challenger!....

I bet you do....!.......I love my challenger, but sometimes I wish I had the speedster or any other twin engine model, so that way, if one engine goes down, I'll have a back up to get me home!.........
Be careful throttling up if you have an engine go dead. If your dragging a motor and going to fast, you can suck water into your engine through the exhaust system filling up. If your running and one engine is stalled, pinch your water inlet supply to the motor, to keep that from happening.
To test the compression, you'll take off your plug wires, put them on your grounding tab. Then, remove the spark plugs. Thread the compression gage into one of your cylinders and roll the engine over several revolutions. Record (or remember) the reading. Then do it again, 3 or 4 times to each cylinder, then get the average. You don't want any results below 100 psi and you shouldn't get much more than a 5-10 psi difference between cylinders, per engine.
Don't forget to post your results and once you do this, it's a good idea to do it once a season to keep an eye on the wear and tear on your motors.
When your done with the compression tests, if both engines come out good, then move on to checking your fuel system. Filters, inside and outsid the carbs.......

Cool!....

Glad to see your satisfied. Check all your fuses and electrical connections from your paddle wheel to the gage.
Good luck............................................

hey guys i did the compression test here are the results

left top=130, 132, 131
left bottom= 140,140,140
Right top= 140, 140, 140
Right bottom= 140, 141, 142

I cleaned the carbs and the motor didnt die out like it did before, but im thinking it might only die when its in the water under a load. Im gonna test it this weekend agin. how are these compression numbers? looks like the left top one is little low but thats not the motor that is cutting out.
