Just bought 2005 RXT

I just got a 2005 RXT with around 85 hours. I did a test ride before I bought it and was able to get it up to around 50-55 mph riding by myself. I thought it probably just needed a tune up because it had been sitting up for a little while according to the previous owner. A few days later I took it out with my son. Around an extra 100 pounds. At that time it lacked any acceleration at all and would not go over around 15-20 mph. The engine would rev fine. Just would not put the power to the water. I believe that it most likely needs a wearing ring based on what I have been reading. What other maintenance should I do on this ski that I just bought. I'm concerned about the supercharger and plan on sending it out for a rebuild very soon. I also plan on changing the oil and replacing the spark plugs. Anything else I should check? Should I go ahead and have the jet pump rebuilt while I replace the wearing ring or just replace the wearing ring and lubricate the pump well? Just want to make sure that the ski performs as it should and lasts for a reasonable number of years. I want it to perform at a stock level and then maybe next season I'll do some upgrades. Thanks for your help.

Wear ring is likely the issue and 55 is to slow as well. Again, could be the wear ring. The SC needs rebuilt NOW due to ceramic washers. If they fail you will need a new engine. Do those and plugs and you will likely be happy with the results.

Thanks, that is what I was thinking. Will probably order a new wear ring this weekend and start pulling the supercharger. Have you used the supercharger rebuild service? What is their usual turnaround? How hard is it to change the oil and filter in one of these engines? Can you use synthetic oil after you upgrade the supercharger to the metal washers or should I stick to the mineral based oil?

Welcome,
The 55 mph means your SC is most likely not working. Should be doing avg. 63 mph. A compression test would help rule out anything else(135-140).
Look up at the leading edge of the impeller. If it's nicked a little bent, then remove and recondition.
.. The SC rebuild... Use the forum search under SC rebuild, for names. You can also get the new heavy duty SC from eBay or beat up your local dealer on price. Stay with the recommended seadoo blend for SC. I have found the dealers sell this cheaper than other oils. The other oils play havoc with the oil pressure sensors. .
On changing the oil. Oil must be sucked up through the dip stick. The oil filter is easy. Refer to shop manual. I found one free on line.

As above, a loss if 15-20 MPH is almost always a SC issue. Can be a hose off or loose as well. But in your case it needs rebuilt no matter what unless there is written proof the washers were changed. But at 15 hrs shy, do it anyways.

I'm anxious to get started figuring it out but I was hoping my repair manual would have arrived already.

Don't wait for the book.

Get in there...pull that air intake off your sc...and with the motor off..try to spin the sc wheel with your finger tip.

I agree, its an easy test and you will know where you stand. It should be VERY hard to impossible to spin with your fingers. If not, it is for sure bad.

I'll give it a try tomorrow. I was planning on pulling the SC anyway because I don't know if the washers have been changed out or not.

My wear ring and new spark plugs are scheduled to arrive today. I'm hoping to have them changed out this weekend and do another quick test on the water just to make sure the wearing ring is my issue and not something else. I'll be crossing my fingers. Do I need to re-lube the jet pump when I change out my wear ring? Also, I know I really shouldn't ride before I replace the supercharger washers but I want to know if the wear ring is my problem. Supercharger and oil/filter change will be the next order of business. Then hopefully my RXT will be ready for summer riding and pulling my son on the tube.

I understand your excitement, but if the washers fail it wll cost you an engine...

If your are going to test it. Let it warm up for ten minutes in the water. Do not slam the throttle. Use easy smooth increases. That way you won't stress the SC washers. This is if you did the spin test with your fingers while the SC is on the engine. If the SC can move with your finger, then forget it. There will be no performance anyway. Replace it, then go for a test run.

Not yet, unfortunately I haven't had the right numbers on my lottery ticket yet and I have been having to go to work. I hope to get it checked out soon.

Well...just to impress upon you the seriousness of this...

Do not start it again before you do check the sc wheel movement. If your sc is already gone...you will be doing nothing by starting it up except pushin crap through the motor. As for taking it for the weekend and maybe getting around to it some time down the road...you do the math.

seconded. I just rebuilt a supercharger yesterday for a customer who I had to inform a washer was missing. No fun.
