Jump Starting the Boat / Trickle Charge

So I've read about how we can't jump the boat with a running vehicle, or jump mode on a charger. But how about my battery box. I don't see how it would be any different that just hooking up another, or a different battery. But due to the sensitivity of these things I just want to make sure.

I'll be on a long trip out of the state with the boat, and will be using my stereo a lot. I figured I'd throw my jumper box in my buddies day cruiser, and can jump my battery if I manage to kill it somehow. Do I run any risk of having issues?

Also, is there any issue with running a trickle charger with the MPEM still hooked up? I disconnect the battery lines when I run the full size charger, but a trickle charger hooked up would be nice.

Thanks!

I keep a jump pack with me, but have never used it. I dont see a problem with it. You arent getting the extra amperage you get with another running charging sytem.

I always make sure there is no way to damage the boats electrical system when charging. Even with a trickle charger. The MPEM is waaaay to expensive for me to chance it. I have a master battery disconnect. With it off, it is fine to charge the battery in the boat. You can add the swicth for 30 bucks if you dont have one.

Jump box is fine, and so is a trickle charger. BUT, personally, any time I hook up a charger, I disconnect the the cables. The price of an MPEM is just to high to take a chance.

Awesome, thanks for the clarifications guys. I'll likely install a kill switch after I return from Shasta, that sounds like the best bet.

riddle me this

It seems like all boater and PWC owners have battery issues from time to time.
Charging and/or jumping sometimes just has to be done.
So why would Seadoo build an MPEM that is so fragile. I guess I have been lucky so far since I have not had any problems, but you all have me concerned because from these post I have been doing everything wrong.
I will be installing a shutoff switch or a bypass very soon.
I am open to any suggestions.

Guru, I have to admit, I've very surprised to hear of this problem. It would seem that this would be an obvious problem to avoid as a boat manufacturer, sigh...
