Impeller hitting wear ring.

Over winter I changed the oil on most skis, and replaced bearings on some, but on my 97 GTX, 787, I replaced the bearing shaft, bearings and wear ring. Thought all was fine, and put the ski in the water. With just me on it, it runs fairly well, but does not pull perfectly. Towing, it is useless as it revs up with no forward motion. SO...I took it apart today, and the impeller is digging into the wear ring. (Spins freely by hand and does not hit the wear ring) There is lateral (left and right play) in the shaft.....so is the brass housing bad, or ruined from the prior bearings failing? Is this common? Any other ideas?
I am at a loss, other than to replace the brass housing (for lack of a better term)
Thanks,
Khris

Besides the lateral movement being an issue, how is it that it is spinning freely.

It is direct drive to the motor. Only way it can spin free is if something is defective. Shaft, spline, PTO,,,

Sorry, spinning freely in my hand, taken off of the ski. So, in other words, with no torque, the impeller spins freely inside the wear ring.
Also should mention the new bearing shaft looks perfect still.

I would check and see if the motor mounts are broken or loose. You may need to align the motor to the pump.
