Hey folks. I need to check ingintion timing on the 717 corn popper. 12 hrs on a new Fullbore motor. Whaddya think of this plan?

As the timing is to be checked cold, and at 6K, both according to the shop manual, I thought I'd see if I can set idle to 6K, shut down, allow to cool, rig for the check, start and check.

See any harm in a cold start at 6K?

It's just completely unnecessary. You set the timing in a 717 by lining up the indicator marks on the stator and the case before you put the flywheel(mag) on. Then your done forever, just enjoy. It's mechanical and won't change on you.
 
OK, so I ended up NOT doing that, just didn't sit right with me.

Didn't worry about about temps all that much, just start 'er up, adjust idle to 6K, check timing. Not easiest thing to do, but dead on, near as I could tell. Thank you, Fullbore.

As Matt Braley says, it won't change, don't have to do it again.

Don't mind telling you 6K in the driveway at no load made me a little nervous :)
 
Was there a reason for checking your timing?
Was it not running right? I really don't see the point if all is perfect

Well, reason was I wanted to confirm it was set properly by the builder.

Reason I waited till 12 hrs was, well, I really didn't. Checked it as soon after re-installing the motor as the process allowed, referring to my newly installed Tinytach (GTi was originally tach-free).

Early in the break-in I found the TT was set incorrectly and the 6000 rpm indicated that I checked timing at was really 3000. :redface:

As the motor ran so well I didn't think it was urgent to re-check, but I did want to confirm it was right before putting more and harder hours on it next season.

Won't have to do it again, and I can make a few other small repairs and put the thing away with an easy mind.
