loud clacking noise coming from deep center of the engine. sounds like a thrown rod or a spun main bearing. the motor runs fine just a LOUD knocking noise coming from deep within. had to idle it back to the dock. just got finished going over everything. compression was at 155 on both cylinders. i guess i start tearing it apart to figure out what that noise is. i could shoot a video of it running on the trailer and post it if anyone thinks they may be able to help.

Could be a bad lower rod bearing.

Just for giggles... take the pump, and driveshaft out, and see if the noise goes a way.

Pull off the flywheel cover and start it up...could be something insde like a loose nut-bolt-flywheel gear.....you never know.

i pulled the plugs and turned the shaft by hand and it turns freely. the pistons seem fine. it's a little early yet and i don't want to wake my neighbors. once it gets a little later i'll shoot some video and then start tearing into it.

it locked up. the starter engaged, it turned half a turn and froze up. now the starter clicks but it won't turn over. there is a sheen of oil all over the bottom of the inside of the hull and some oil splatter marks down below the motor where the exhaust pipe wraps around. the motor mount at the tuning pipe is covered in oil. i think at this point i'll pull the carbs and the exhaust and then just yank the motor out. :driving:

i'm this far into it and haven't found anything wrong. the crankshaft will not turn. the plugs are out. i'm assuming at this point it's shot. now i have to decide where to go from here. the noise was coming from the area of the forward crank shaft bearings. i don't have the tools to pull the flywheel. looks like i need a 27mm socket.

Yep...go to sears...thats where I got mine. I had to use a friends impact wrench to crack it loose however.

do i need a special tool to pull the flywheel?

there is a gsx for sale that needs a new CDI box. wondering if i should just go that way. i really love this boat though. i'd hate to part with her. i blew my knee out on this ski. i carry around 13 screws and a plate because of her. we go back a long way. :nopity:

Rebuild Compression

I did a rebuild on a 951 engine. Started breaking it in the way this forum recommends.. About 10 minutes into the 50% break in I lost power and my compression is only at 80 psi, the pistons dont looked burned through the rave valves,, is there anything i can do to save it or am i screwed??

this is what i'm afraid of.

i just went thru everything on mine. got it running tops. i run pretty much at WOT all day. by fixing everything i think i gave it just enough boost to start breaking worn parts. i'm afraid if i fix one thing it will strengthen things just enough to break another.

my buddy has a 2007 GTI sitting in his garage that he never uses. i'm going to go borrow it tonight.

i put my impeller tool on the PTO and got the shaft to turn. it appears the forward piston was not getting oil underneath it. the piston rod and crank on that side are really dry compared to the other side. there is oil in both lines from the pump. there may be something plugging it past that though. unless a toasted bearing simply overheated and burnt everything.
