here might be a problem... checked the front fuses like previously mentioned and from the bottom up goes 15a, 5a, 15a, 5a... the first 5a from the bottom was blown. I replaced it and when I reconnected the neg on the battery it popped...what does this fuse go to and what might be the problem?

I'm looking at the 2001 service manual here, the electrical schematic, it goes: 15a batt, 5a MPEM, spare, spare, spare, spare

There is supposed to be another black wire comming out of the top of the box that connects to the battery negative.

In the harness coming from that box is a black wire... when I traced it, it comes to the front by the gas tank then hooks to the outside of the mpem (the white box on the front of the motor)...looks as though is always been like that

do you have a pic of what this black wire might go too? the reason why im asking is it doesn't look like anything like that was ever in there

My mistake. I misread the wiring diagram. There isn't one. Its part of the wiring harness and goes to the engine ground.

The fuses are supposed to be from bottom to top; 15a batt, 5a mpem, spare, spare, spare, spare. According to the manual.

Try disconnecting the regulator red and black wire and try the fuse again.
The regulator is bolted to the front of the mpem.
I'm leaning towards a stator or regulator short to ground. Or the regulator is shot and shorted the red and black together...

Maybe the way its wired is so that the fuse goes to the battery and the regulator is in parallel with the mpem internally.

from the bottom up? if that's the case im blowing the fuse to the mpem... what would cause this? is the mpem toasted (man I hope not)? how to check?

Does your ski have a VTS?

If so, pull the fuse and or unplug it and then see if the MPEM fuse blows still.

Is this the one coming from the solenoid box? if so, where in the harness can I disconnect it?

Does your ski have a VTS? I dont know about the vts...how would I find out? (man, im showing how new I am to jetskis!....LOL

anyway cant do anything more tonight as im out of fuses. ill try as you guys suggested and let you know

VTS is a Variable Trim System. It allows the rear jet to be moved up or down and adjust the ride of the ski.

I am not intimate with the 2000 model ski, but I think if you do have it, it will be a rocker switch on the handle bars that have an up arrow and a down arrow.

Going to look at the manual now to see if it could have it as an option...

Looked at the manual and it does not look like the GTI had the VTS system available.. But,,, I am not all knowing what options were on what skis. So double check to be sure.

Bottom line, the VTS fails often and pops the MPEM fuse once the VTS module is defective.

But,,, if you don't have one, this would not pertain to you..

nope, no vts.... I did do as mekanix stated and removed the black/red wire from the mpem's harness. as soon as tried to reconnect the neg battery wire the fuse blew again..... now im really out until tomorrow!...lol

I think the regulator is one whole connector with 4 wires. Unplug that one. Which wires did you unplug ? I just noticed that there was more than one set of the same colors.

I meant to say the red wire and the black wire and not the redandblack one :-p so if you only took the redandblack one off you would have gotten the same result.

And its in the front electrical box on top of the mpem.

I did some searching on the web... I was referring the ecu as the mpem...... I disconnected the black/red wire from the ecu

Ok in that case you would have the same result because that wire won't effect it.

Try disconnecting the regulator and that will acomplish what I was trying to do.

Sorry about the confusion, I hate typing on my phone :-p

Ok so when you connected battery it popped the fuse... This is bad my friend...it just might be your MPEM. sorry for the bad news.

how can I test it to make sure its the mpem? when I was reading up on this they stated it could be the mpem or solenoid but how to tell?
and also I found an aftermarket mpem on ebay for $139...anyone ever use one of these?

It could be the mpem BUT you have to isolate it first by eliminating everythng else!

The regulator being shorted would do this.
A guage shorting out might also do this.
Even a shorted coil might do this.
Or a bad/missing ground might do this...

I wouldn't jump on an mpem yet and risk frying it.

Besides the fuse for the batt/charging circuit is blowing and NOT the mpem fuse. That alone makes me want to look at the charging side before condemning the mpem.

no its the 5a mpem fuse that's blowing

Oops, my mistake, I read first fuse from the bottom but missed the 5 :P

After doing some searching I've found reference to a zener diode inside the mpem that shorts out and causes this problem if the voltage goes too high. It was in order to protect the mpem or stop it from catching on fire aparently.

Looks like you can bench test the mpem with just power and see if the fuse blow's, and if so, you know for sure its only inside the mpem.

MPEM part number: 278-001-496
year/model's: 99-01 GS / 01 GTS / 99-02 GTI
Negative pin 1-25
Positive pin 1-26

When you look at the connector and those 3 spade pins are on the bottom and all the small pins are on the top, # 25 is the middle one and 26 is the right one.

What usually happens is the previous owner tried to jump the jetski battery with a car battery and POOF! Fried the mpem... It's terrible that people do this considering there is a sticker on ski warning owner NOT to do this. If a battery in a ski is dead fix the battery issue(charge it properly out of ski or buy new)... don't jump it!!!!

What amazes me more is that there isn't a diode in there that just wouldnt allow reverse current to flow and do damage! I see it on lot's of cheap electronics so why not the expensive ones !

I just spoke w the previous owner...he didn't jumpstart the ski but did put a trickle charger on the battery while it was in the ski... im sure it pooped the diode...going to take it out now and bench test it

Cool. If it's toast are you going to try and fix it ?
Yup, she's toast...did the bench test and it popped right away...anyone know the correct diode to put in it? I think Im going to try that fix above...if that doesn't work Ill order the aftermarket on ebay

I saw the pn in a post. Google 2000 gti blowing 5a fuse and it was one of the first few links. I think it was on pwctoday.

Thank you... Heres a pic of the mpem...where would this diode be located in there? If I go to radio shack with that part number , will they be able to give me the correct one?
