95 gtx rehab was complete. put fresh fuel to her and she started and ran perfect on the trailer. I then touched the throttle and all of a sudden she detonated and locked up and shut off. I could have almost cried. only ran for 15 seconds. well i walked away from it beacause i was so disgusted. so tonight i started tearing her down on the carb side and boom it hit me!!!! ah!!!! shit!!!!! im missing a bolt!!! yes that right and bolt was never tighten on the arrestor box, the bolt came out and was rattling on top of the butterflies and when I hit the throttle..... caaa blooeyyy!!!! completely destroyed the rotory valve and slightly scored the cover. the bolt was right under the carb when i removed it so it didnt make it past the RV and into the lower end. ordering a new RV from SBT and barely maching the cover face. should get her back right? ya think? I feel like such an idiot. Note to self.... dont have any distraction when finalizing one of these things..like a bunch of buddies standing over ya while you finish up.

You must have put the wrong bolt in there because if it was the right one lengthwise even if it backs out it should be physically impossible back out and to fall in because its too long!!! The flame arrester mesh should have stopped it!

It probably also destroyed the brass rv drive gear. Check and make sure the rv shaft is turning, if not you should tear the bottom end apart to clean out all the brass filings.

just the arestor box was on top of the carb. i put it there getting the cart ahead of the mule. left everything off to adjust carbs if needed.

oh shes turning.....unbelievably! gear is good to go.

Don't count on it. Did you pull the RV shaft? The brass gear will catch most of the time, turning the RV plate. But the timing will be off and be inconsistent. When that happened to our 96 GTI, I split the cases to get the brass shavings cleaned out and discovered that the gear in the crank also moved out of place.

Yep.

The reason the engine stopped is because the gear sheared, and the RV went out of time. You aren't the first person this has happened to... and I've never seen the gear walk away from this.

Pull the RV shaft out and inspect the gear. Don't throw in the towel just yet.

Get a large socket that fits over the RV shaft, followed by a big washer and the corresponding threaded bolt. I beleive its an 6mm bolt 5-6 inches long. You also need a nut. Remove the snap ring holding the RV shaft in. Snap ring pliers work well. Thread the nut all the way up to the head of the bolt. Then slide the washer on, followed by the socket. Thread the bolt into the end of the RV shaft. Then start tightening the nut. This will suck the RV shaft into the socket well. Wiggle wiggle, then out it comes. Then inspect the gear. If all is well, you are very VERY lucky. If the gear is stripped, then it is advised to disassemble the engine and check for further damage, and flush out the metal chunks.

:agree: if you don't have a large socket, get a PVC end cap that is larger than the RV opening and drill a hole in the center for the bolt/nut/washer combination.

well i went from being the biggest dummy of the year to the luckiest dummy of the year. replace the RV very minor scoring on the cover. put her back together tonight and shes running like a raped ape!!! shoo son, that was a close one.
