So I bought 2 repair kits from 'gelcote.ca' for almost $100

went to town on both my skis, and then used 600 grit wet sandpaper... smooth as a ... new hull (OMG sanding is so hard)...

anyway, it's super smooth, but is all dull and worn looking.

how do i get that original deep black back!? the scratches are gone, and it's smooth again, but i want it to look new!

thanks.

you need to wet sand it, 1000 grit, then 1500, finally 2000. Then use rubbing compound...then finish with your favorite wax.

I also posted this in "Goofus" newbie hull question thread

I fixed my nephew's ski this spring. It had the same type of "missing paint" in 2 spots down to the black. I had estimates up to $1200 to paint the hull. I did it for less than $150. I called Yamaha and go the name of the paint company and ordered 2 cans of paint, 1 primer and 2 clear coat.
(All aerosol spray) from Colorite Dist. www.colorite.com They have paint for all makes I believe.

This is what I did as well and it looked great. If you are having trouble finding high grit sandpaper, you can find it at an auto parts store near the body work section. Home Depot, Lowes, etc. usually do not have such fine grained paper.

Yamaha had paint. 1995.
The paint was peeling off in 2 large spots.
Looks great now.

How do you uploads pictures in a post. I know how when I start a thread but in a post I click on "insert image" and it asks for the URL????????

ok,
Too much trouble and I don't want to join another club.

Mods...can you change the image control on the posts so we can insert pics easier?

Thanks

Click on Go Advanced in the lower right corner of the Reply to Thread box, then click on the paper clip. Click Add files, then click select files. Open your picture file from your computer (might take a little time) and select the pictures you want to insert. Click upload files and they upload. Next click on done and the attatchments page closes. Next put your cursor where you want the picture inserted, right click then click on the paper clip again. You will see the picture name pop up and click on it. TA DA!!!! Picture is inserted in the post!

my local ACEh had 5 sheet of 600 for $3.50, i'll see if they have 1200 and more. thanks! it's super smooth, but not the prettiest yet... I need to dothe one section again sinceit was so deep.... i might also get a powered sander since I did so much of the hull... is everyone here doing by hand?! spent a good 3 hrs on it last night...

I did it all by hand but it was mostly a bunch of small touchup spots. I had one section that was about a 1.5 inches wide by 12 inches long, but that was the biggest.

i went to autozone and they had a auto paint section with a pack of 1000,1500,2000,2500 sand paper for like 5 bucks 2 of each i believe and sanded my ski and it looks new again. check your auto parts store.

I bought some 1000 grit at Painter supply, they also have finer grits. IDK  if this is a national chain.

2 before and 2 after. All hand sanded.

I have a question in terms of what grit sandpaper to start with and move up to.

The pic shows a 2004 GTX 4tec that I acquired that sat in the ocean behind a yacht for 3 months and
the hull was inundated with marine life etc. I was able to scrape off the shells etc but as you can see am
left with the residue of the shells etc.

I need to sand off this residue so I can restore the hull. I cannot scrape off this residue so I will need to
obviously either sand it or use an acid but have declined the acid option.

Can anyone tell me the grit to start with and then move up to?

Looks pretty rough under there. You are going to want to start with a coarse sandpaper, otherwise you will be sanding forever. I would start around 150 -200 grit and see how well it removes the crud. You can then adjust up or down depending on the results.

Thanks for the reply. I never thought of going that strong. Can the hull withstand that strong a grit usually?

I would not use one until you are ready to finish (high grit paper). Too easy to accidentally sand down to the fiberglass with a powered sander unless you are very adept with one.

EDIT: To answer more directly...Yes it is OK to use one, but the above statement applies.
