Pull the spark plugs first.....and uhm...why would you suspect you lost a tooth on the flywheel....and what exactly are you expecting to do once you are past the "missing" tooth?
Okay...I understand you have a starting prob. So what exactly are you gonna do when you turn the motor by hand...besides reinstalling the spark plugs? You gonna try to fire it up?...with a tooth missing on the flywheel? That tooth somewhere in the engine?
Pull the starter and put it in a vice; Apply 12 volts. The gear on the starter should not only spin, but it should extend and retract when you apply/disconnect power. If it doesn't extend, you need to replace/repair the starter. This is probably a starter problem.
It does not extend and retract. Check your resources before you answer...
Only spins...Ok,, a little politeness will go a long ways.
In reading above, you state the starter does not engage. I assume you stated this while the starter was installed. If you pull it and then hit i swith voltage, does the bendix kick out or ONLY spin. I beleive this is what he was trying to determine.

Perhaps you should review this so you understand how a starter works.
