I now its a little cold but not cold enough to stop riding. We should get a group and go out for a ride. Lake or sea. Let me know if you down

Got the battery charged up and hoping it isn't too windy this weekend.

How about on the San Jac river at Magnolia Gardens? River valley and trees should block the strong south wind....

Come on guys, give me an excuse to get the boat out of winter storage...

But summerville is pretty far for the rest of us Houstonians.

We LOVE summerville, but the drive makes us feel the urge to spend the weekend there and camp out.

The river is a much nicer ride though. Calm water, several sandbar/beaches to ride up on and hang out, and good waterskiing water.

Take hwy 6 (or however you get into houston) to beltway 8 South or East to Garrett, exit going east until you get to the Good Times Marina sign. Marina website is at http://www.goodtimesmarina.com/

It is just below the Lake Houston dam.

Cool thing is, besides no crowds, smooth water, and good bar-food, there are a pair of mating bald eagles just upstream from the marina, so keep your eyes open for them. They fly around there all the time, and you can catch them in the big pine tree with the odd looking T in it. They will land there and watch boaters like we are idiots, and you can pull up right under them and take pictures and they won't budge. As soon as you leave the marina and make the first turn north, the tree is on your left.

See pic for location of eagles. And YES, the water is almost always as smooth as it is in the picture... There is a sandbar north (upstream) with a great beach for kids and dogs, and another about 2 miles downstream even better, maybe a mile long. There is a good 3-4 mile stretch including this portion for waterskiing.

Dang that looks cool!!! Im going out to the lake today to take my ski for its first ride! Im stoked!

Sounds like fun! It is pretty windy down here, so the lakes are choppy. But I think that river might be a hot spot this weekend.

Somerville should be nice on a weekday, no crowds.

Where do you put in? Somerville Marina just south of the dam has worked well for us on our camping/boating/jet skiing excursions.

Yeah, I am probably going to put in at Overlook Park, The lake itself is VERY low right now so im going to hang out near the dam. I will have my Fiance take some pictures of me freezing my butt off!
Let me know when any of you guys would be interested in coming down for a weekend and camping and everything because during the summer, i camp like every other weekend!! I love being at the lake and now i have a toy to play on makes it even better!!:hurray:

Well, the wife is intent on going to Good Times Marina on the river, so unless something comes up, we will be there on saturday.

If anyone wants to flag us down, we are in the green/purple/white 97 Challenger with the bimini top up. I am the guy with the beer in hand...

CRAZY DRUNK DRIVER....

Man i wish i could go but the better half says i have to play in the back yard this weekend, Next weekend im sure we would be down, is there any campsites or anything around there?

There is a campground right down the street called Magnolia Gardens. It is on the bend of the river with a mile or so of sand bar. We usually hang out there and throw the ball for the dog, or just get some sun.

It looks like we are on this saturday, and from here on out, we will be there or on Lake Houston pretty much every weekend we don't have other plans.

We will do Somerville a couple times this year, but it has to be a 3-day weekend or something to make it worth our drive, and put up the tent, etc.

By the way, there is a shallow spot, especially on low tides. It is at the railroad bridge on the north side. You are fine if you go stay on the east side of the river as you go south from Magnolia Gardens beach, then when you are at a 45 degree angle to the dredging barge beached on the opposite shore, head straight toward it. Then go through the bridge under the 3rd or 4th hole. Then it goes back to 25 feet or so.

It gets to about 2' if you try to go on the other side. I made it one time, and the entire river was watching me. On the way back, I landed up on the sand in 6" of water. Killed the engine and jumped out and pushed it 10 feet, then got back on it.

OK, the wife is a little "under the weather", she has that upper chest and head thing that is going around.

BUT!!! She took a half day off today to sleep it off, and wants to go to the river at Good Times tomorrow morning.

Anyone up for meeting there? Going to be too windy to be on the lake. Weather.com says gusts up to 28 mph!

The low-lying river should block most of that.

Battery is charged and we are amped for the first outing of the season :hurray:

We should be there by 10-ish, depending on how fast we can get the boat out of storage, and if we have to air up any trailer tires, etc. And traffic. We are coming from south of Houston near Lake Jackson.

Look what you guys missed...

This was after we were done and having a double cheeseburger and fried mushrooms at the Good Times Marina...

And the fish were biting too!

We parked on a beach off of Newport (north of the pic by about 2-3 miles) and had a couple beers, and this guy was parked there with his wife and 3 little kids and chihuahua and he started chunking cut bait out and caught about 8 REDFISH while we were sitting there in an hour :hurray:

The tide was low and since it hasn't rained much lately, the redfish were coming up all the way to the dam at lake Houston.

The water didn't taste salty, but apparently was brackish enough for the reds to come up.

Also, at the dock when we were putting in, this other guy had a HUGE red, maybe 30 inches.

Damn dude that is too cool! Wish i could of gone, but next time yall should plan a weekend to come to somerville!!!

We might come to somerville next week if we have spare time. Wife is on spring break. It would likely be middle of the week, camp a night, and head home next afternoon.

Depends if I can get my truck suspension replaced and have time left over.

Python, where are you wanting to go? Somerville or the river?

This was all last week, and I haven't figured out if we can go this weekend. I have a wasted ball joint and tie rod on my truck, and figured I would just replace all of them. So I might be tied up for weekend, and into monday as I take it and get it realligned.
