Hello guys, im a new member, just wanted to introduce my self, I just bought a 1995 sportster, single engine.

Im just learning so please bear with me.

I havent driven it yet, the gentleman i purchased it from turned it on in front of me, so hopefully it works? LOL, I know thats not saying much, but hopefully I can take it out this weekend and try it out.

What does everybody here recommend I do? thank you by the way..

Hi and congrats.

Go take it over to pudingstone... throw it in, and see how it runs. post some pics too.

Thank you guys,

I was looking around the threads, and Dr. Honda I love what you did to your sportster, it looks brand new, and I love your top too..

Im gonna take it to puddingstone this weekend, your the second person that recommended that place! (you and the person I bought it from).

Dr. Honda where did you get your seats at?
Also where did you get that top?

Was it expensive?

Thank you

Hi,

Thanks for the complements.

The seats were a combined effort. I made most of it, but I was having problems with the backrests, and back bolsters. (My sewing skills aren't very good) So, I had a member that use to be very active on this board make them up for me. I'll try to dig up his web site. His prices are very reasonable, and he does nice work. (tell him I sent you, once I find his info)

The top was from eBay. I paid $120 shipped for it. It's a small shop out of SoCal, so you may be able to pick it up. (down around Alliso Vejao) I know his prices went up, but if you don't pay for the shipping, he may cut you a deal. (I will look for that info too)

FYI... I grew up in SoCal, so I know all the fun places to take a boat. I lived in Fullerton/Anaheim most of my life, but my folks had a beach house at the base of PV. I use to take my old JS440, and launch it right from my front yard. (right off of Pasio DelMar, and Western Ave)

Give me a few hours, and I'll find the info for you.

I need new seats for my 1995 sportster. Anyone know of where I can get some made or find some? Thanks!

Hi guys,

OK... here is the guy who was making the seats. his web site is still up, so I'm going to say he is still making them. Oh... and if you look at his pictures... my boat is there. :)

Here is a link to they guy I got my top from. The one in the link will be too small, but you can look though his stuff t find what you need. (he's in Dana Point)

As I recall... you will want a top to fit around 83" wide. I bought the 75" wide version, and it fits well... but I can't fold it back on to the deck lid. If it was just a little wider, it would clear the edges a little better.

Wow

Dr. Honda, your the best I just asked the seller a question about his tops,
I have the green setup too like you, I was thinking of going with a grey top?

Also is that how your boat looked like before you finished it? wow you brought it back from the dead! Great Job!

What is the difference between your boat and mine? in terms of specs?

Yup... the before pic is mine.

Our boats are basically the same. You have a 650 engine, and I have a 720 engine. I'm not sure if you have "X" motor or not... but we are about 15 hp different. For speed... I'm getting into the mid 40's with 2 people and gear... you should see right at 40. (assuming everything is running right)

My boat has the newer electronics with the security lanyard... you have a regular key.

that's about it.

There are a few projects getting done... I'm going to start a new thread on before and afters.

Hey cheap..congrats on the boat. Puddingstones' cool, cool place to "test', and at this time, should be nobody there.

Your boat has the "X" motor, pop'n out 80hp.

Thanks guys, this place is awesome...

Im going to take it to puddingstone this weekend,

I wanted to ask you guys how do you recharge the battery?

The gentleman I bought it from said he hadnt turned it on since last summer, so he recharged the battery to turn it on in front of me, but im afraid that when I take it to the lake on saturday it wont turn on, since I picked it up on monday (it would be a week since he turned it on?).

Also do you think I should put more oil in it?

Thanks, sorry for all the questions, I just wanted to be prepared.

I've been following this thread. Thanks for posting up the links to the bimini top. I didn't realize they were so inexpensive. I'll need to get one.

Am I reading correctly that the 657x puts out 80 hp? I thought it was only 70... That's nice to hear, if I heard you right, lol.

Thanks,

KW

Ok here are some pictures of my sportster... this is the before pictures, hopefully i can do what Dr. Honda has done..

I think its in pretty good shape, I dont know about the motor, but I guess Ill work on that..

I got this whole thing for $1,700.. which is more than NADA blue book guide, but in Southern Cali these things sell for over $4900..

I was about to pull the trigger on that boat...saw it in Craigslist...LOL. Beat me to it, homeboy.

Looksgreat, i'd leave it alone, get a new battery, and go thru the carb/s before taking to water. I'm in Placentia, if you want me to look at it...pm me.

Really?? wow.. I know when I was picking it up he was getting phone calls like crazy...

Ok where is the battery? LOL? and what does go through the carbs mean?

I still need to go through this forum and learn a lot more, also I just ordered a bimini top from the person Dr. Honda referred me to (safeguard covers).

What a great place, and a great awesome price, $128 delivered to my office. Dr. Honda, does this mean you put "holes" in your boat to put up the bimini top? A DIY would be great (I guess I should do one since Im about to embark on this mission)...

Thank you seadooya I got your pm...

Can anyone tell me what is the difference in the look and outside design between a a 1995 and 1996 sportster?

Im trying to see the design differences... thanks...

Really? Wow great, I see they sell like decals and hydro mats, and most start with 1996... so just wondering...

Cheap, be sure you remove one of the cables when charging the battery, being lazy about this can cost you the 800bux electronic module that has been obsolete a long time already - many of the pre-security have a battery switch for some security. use the same oil the previous owner used to prevent gelling inside the oil filter and tiny oil lines, this gelling will get you in trouble just like the lean fuel problems pointed out already, an easy way to get the feeling for jet boating is to dip the boat on a side ramp and leave it on the trailer while you start it and feel the cooling hoses and observe any fuel or oil leaks, once you do this you can also test the charging with a voltmeter directly on the battery - just lift the throttle a little and the water will flow thru the engine much better than on the garden hose at home so you can inspect many, many things on this day - go home and preapre accordingly for some fun filled days cruising, fishing or tubing and avoid the breakdown drama.

Thank you for your advice, will do, will remove battery cable when charging it..

I guess you can charge it with my truck battery?

I believe the gentleman left some oil in there, if not Ill call him.

Also will buy a marine battery like seadooya said..

Also will go through the carbs. In the manual, it said i should let the bilge fan blower blower for like 4 minutes?

cheap....hit up Harbor freight for battery on/off switch. Install inline, sothen when charging, no need to keep reaching in disconnecting things.

The mentioning of the blower, is to when launching, turn on "prior" to firing of the motors...
